Candidates in this role will be working a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office Mon, Tues, Thur, with the option to work from home on Wed, Fri


Our client, a Canadian multinational energy transportation company with a focus on the transportation, distribution, and generation of energy, has an immediate need for a Hydraulic Engineer. This is a contract position for one (1) year located in Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta.


Description


The Hydraulic Engineer in this role will primarily focus on providing technical hydraulic engineering expertise to ensure a safe process hydraulic design for our Liquids Pipeline (LP) assets. This includes performing and reviewing steady state and transient hydraulic analysis for new project proposals and existing operations. Job accountabilities will include providing engineering recommendations to mitigate surge overpressure risk, and leading efforts to coordinate these changes.


Scope


  • Review operational process data to drive technical recommendations and enhance hydraulic studies.
  • Provide process hydraulic knowledge as it related to liquid pipelines.
  • Review and provide technical input in development of Material Balance, PFD, P&ID, Shutdown Keys, control narratives, and associated engineering documents bringing a Process Safety perspective.
  • Influencing process safety into project designs, MOCs, asset health, risk management, operational enhancements
  • Work on complex technical hydraulic issues to support the safe design and operation of LP assets.


Accountabilities


  • Communication may be written or verbal and aimed at technical and non-technical audiences
  • Actively participate in development of appropriate documentation outlining design parameters, assumptions, and results such that the project scope can be easily communicated to other relevant departments within . This involves communicating with Project Teams, Operations, Project Development Engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure that technical results are clearly conveyed and understood.
  • Actively participate in engineering activities to support Project Execution teams in order to ensure that project requirements are met and exceeded where technically justified.
  • Maintain and enhance knowledge level with current hydraulics engineering and pipeline design technologies.
  • Actively participate in scope development of pipeline and facility projects, and PHA reviews.
  • Provide engineering support by actively participating in hydraulics engineering activities related to operation and help troubleshoot hydraulics problems within assigned asset areas.
  • Liaison with key Internal Stakeholder groups, high colaboration with departments such as (but not limited to): Regional Operations & Maintenance, Control Center, Engineering Services, Development Engineering, Project Integration, Project Execution, Infrastructure Planning, Risk Management, Asset Management, Engineering Services.

  • Conduct hydraulic studies using modelling software such as AFT Fathom and Synergi Pipeline Simulator to analyze pipeline and facility systems for design and maintenance issues, develop solutions, and issue formal technical recommendations.
  • Execute and/or review feasibility studies, conceptual designs, process studies, and detail engineering designs to ensure designs comply with quality processes, standards, and industry regulations.
  • Accountable to People Leader who provides supervision, direction, and coaching.
  • Participate and lead Management of Change (MOCs) implementation as it relates to operational changes from hydraulic
  • Ad-hoc collaboration with key External Stakeholder groups such as (but not limited to): Engineering Consultants, CER, PHMSA, APEGA
  • Maintain proficiency with the use of in-house and industry recognized hydraulics engineering tools.


Required


  • Risk assessment methodologies such as PHA, HAZOP, LOPA and/or What If.
  • Preferred:
  • Well-developed problem solving, decision-making, organization and planning skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of hydraulic modelling software such as Synergie Pipeline Simulator (SPS) and AFT Fathom
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Working knowledge of liquid pipeline and facility operations.
  • +5 years of progressively complex hydraulic engineering experience.
  • Effective communication capability including excellent oral and written skills.
  • Ability to travel within Canada and United States.
  • Past experience with project development and/or project engineering scopes.
  • Demonstrated technical competence in hydraulic design and engineering.
  • Experience with hydraulics engineering activities related to operation such as troubleshooting hydraulics problems
  • Must be registered as a P.Eng. in the Province of Alberta
  • Strong ability to leverage operating data to support effective decision making.
