Youth Housing Support Worker Jobs

Part-Time - 12 Month Contract

Provide health teaching about addiction, mental illness and symptom management

Provides case management follow-up supports, and referrals in the areas of health and wellness, harm reduction, counselling, income and food security;

Proven experience working independently, developing and facilitating groups;

Demonstrated experience in cultivating leadership within groups and developing dynamic and innovative programming;

Working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act, Housing Services Act, and Ontario Human Rights Code

1 to 3 years’ experience working with person crisis management and violence against women settings;

Provides programming and facilitates group workshops (e.g. organizing, safety plans, anger management);

Applies the knowledge of the issues of trauma and the dynamics of woman abuse to develop and implement effective support strategies;

Offers clients appointment accompaniment (e.g. court), crisis intervention, supportive counselling, referrals and advocacy;

Working knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act;

Knowledge of harm reduction strategies and training in administering naloxone an asset

Providing life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care and personal self-management skills;

Following prescribed policies and procedures associated with Property Management;

Assisting with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties;

Assisting tenants with financial management including co-ordinating with the Public Trustee, budgeting and ensuring rent and damage deposits are made;

Performs a variety of property management related functions, including:

Providing life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care and personal self-management skills;

Following prescribed policies and procedures associated with Property Management;

Assisting with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties;

Performs a variety of property management related functions, including:

Post-secondary degree/certification in Social Services with experience in housing and community development – or a combination of education and experience

Knowledge of housing bi-law and zoning requirements

Work with landlords to ensure their units comply with bi-law and zoning requirements

Assist tenants in retaining their housing by offering resources and referrals to address their immediate needs

Organize and manage Opening Doors Program evaluation processes

Conduct regular check in’s with clients in the Opening Doors Program to ensure that their tenant responsibilities are being met

Extensive working knowledge of MS Office Professional and strong computer skills

Demonstrated expertise in utilizing CRM systems for efficient and accurate client data management is an asset;

Collaborates with the BC Settlement & Integration staff to provide 1:1 information and orientation to clients on tenancy rights and responsibilities;

Demonstrated recent experience in providing individualized advice, support, information, and guidance to newcomers related to housing;

Extensive knowledge of social housing systems, housing programs and providers and housing advocacy organizations in the Lower Mainland;

Experience working with individuals who experience barriers to housing is an asset;

Experience with outreach and community engagement is an asset;

Excellent interpersonal communication, counseling, and conflict management skills, including a demonstrated ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive written reports.

Work or volunteer experience in a residential care facility or foster home model program.

Additional training and/or certification in mental health, addictions and/or trauma counselling would be considered an asset

Working knowledge of community services and supports

Experience working directly with people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at imminent risk of being homeless

Experience working directly with people who are high risk for violent behavior.

In depth knowledge and understanding of the risk factors for homelessness and the barriers to achieving housing stability for vulnerable people

Computer knowledge in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department specific software, including database programs

Complete other required documentation (e.g. leave management, education requests, travel claims, expense claims) within the required time frames;

Effective communication and time management skills;

Provide health teaching about mental illness and symptom management.

Identify, promote resolution, and management of all emergency situations concerning individuals, staff, and property;

Liaise with the Team Lead and Manager with respect to potential discharges and admissions.

Problem solve issues and provide feedback to Team Lead and Manager around program concerns and direction;

Advocate for clients and liaise with property manager(s) and landlords.

Meet regularly with Manager to discuss individual, team, and the overall effectiveness of client services.

Previous experience working with people experiencing homelessness or who have challenges in obtaining and maintaining housing.

Demonstrable crisis intervention, de-escalation, counseling, conflict resolution, and advocacy skills.

Excellent customer service, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Strong written and verbal English language communication skills; other languages an asset.
