Discover Halifax is the regional destination marketing organization responsible for the growth of the visitation economy in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Established in 2002, it promotes Halifax as a year-round destination for business and leisure travellers, governed by an independent Board of Directors and funded by core partners and a hotel marketing levy. Hawthorne Recruitment, on behalf of our client Discover Halifax, is seeking an experienced VP of Destination Development. This is an opportunity for a seasoned professional to contribute to the growth and development of Halifax's visitation economy.

Reporting to the CEO of Discover Halifax and working closely with other departments within the organization, the VP of Destination Development, will guide the implementation of the Halifax Regional Integrated Tourism Master Plan using a collective impact model approach. You will collaborate with local stakeholders to address tourism infrastructure issues, oversee tourism-related projects, develop relationships with key stakeholders, and lead data collection and information dissemination for regional tourism statistics. Additionally, you will stay informed on industry trends and best practices, monitor and evaluate destination development initiatives, and support the development of policies and community planning that supports the tourism industry.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a related field, ideally with a Master's degree, and at least 10 years of experience in planning, destination development, or a related field with 5 years in a leadership role. Strong project management, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with knowledge of tourism industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies. Experience working in a DMO or a similar organization is preferred, and knowledge and experience in policy development and community planning are beneficial.
