Employment Conditions: Monday - Friday (37.5 hours), occasional evenings and weekends

Compensation: $46,000 - $48,000 annually

Position Summary

The MUSÉE BYTOWN MUSEUM is seeking a fluently bilingual and forward-thinking Visitor and Community Engagement Manager. This core member of the Leadership team provides vision and direction for museum learning, community engagement, and visitor experience at the MUSÉE BYTOWN MUSEUM to better serve diverse audiences ranging from children to seniors, and regular museum- goers to first-time visitors. The Visitor and Community Engagement Manager employs a holistic approach to visitor experience planning and plays an essential role in encouraging audiences to build powerful connections between exhibition and site content and their own lives and experiences.

Success in the role includes building meaningful relationships with diverse communities across the region, developing community-focused public programming, and planning for future collaborations. The Visitor and Community Engagement Manager also trains and oversees contract staff, interns, and volunteers who deliver a suite of regular programs and delivers engaging tours and programming content as needed.

The MUSÉE BYTOWN MUSEUM is a vibrant and progressive community museum in the heart of Ottawa, Ontario - the capital of Canada. It is a registered charity, not-for-profit organization.

Responsibilities

·Lead the development and delivery of museum learning, workshops, tours, public programs, and special events across all platforms.

·Monitor and report on visitor trends, audience engagement, and overall satisfaction through modern audience research and evaluation methods and implement improvement strategies based on data-driven, constructive feedback.

·Jointly oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of summer students and volunteers specific to the Learning and Community Engagement pillar

·Work strategically to better integrate programming opportunities and offerings into visitor experience and engagement.

·Plan, implement, and deliver a visitor experience strategy rooted in accessibility, inclusion, and engagement including first impression, signage and wayfinding, visitor services, and enriching visitor experience offerings such as audio guides and public tours.

·Establish and build on existing community relationships to grow and diversify outreach initiatives.

·Coordinate and facilitate free and low-cost visits to better serve under-resourced communities and provide equity-building opportunities.

·Liaison with tour operators and group tour bookings on programmatic elements

·Alongside the leadership team, ensure a strong and integrated museum identity and narrative flows through all visitor experiences.

·Identify gaps in visitor experience and provide future direction and recommendations to the Executive Director.

·Work closely with the Executive Director on grant writing and sponsorship development.

Required Skills and Experience


·University or College degree in Museum Studies, History, Education, or relevant equivalent. Advanced degree an asset.

·A minimum of two to four years’ experience in visitor experience, professional community museum programming, and/or visitor engagement expertise within a museum, historic house/site, or relevant visitor-centered field.

·Fluently bilingual in French and English.

·Creative, energetic, interest in history and passionate about working with the public.

·Demonstrated ability to lead, coordinate, and supervise staff.

·Excellent communication skills; familiarity with office communication platforms an asset.

·Strong organizational, budget development and control, and time management skills.

·Have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment while maintaining accountability for specific deliverables.

·Familiarity with Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples(UNDRIP), and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
