Position: Community Worker - Supervised Injection Services


Component/Team: Oasis


Status: Casual (No guaranteed hours)


Salary Scale: $18.26 - $21.99 hourly plus 4% vacation pay in lieu of benefits


Start Date: Immediately

Position Description:


The Community Worker is a member of the Oasis team and works closely with team members to provide the highest possible quality of health care services to clients. The Community Worker provides support to the Oasis Drop-In, the Junction and the waiting areas / lobbies / front door area. The role of the Community Worker (Oasis) is to encourage clients to use agency and community services and to provide harm reduction strategies, information and referral. In addition, the Community Worker provides the insight from the perspective of lived experience that is central to planning and delivering services.


Reporting Relationship:


The Community Worker is directly accountable for the carrying out of his/her duties to the CTS Team Leader and through them to the Director of Oasis and to the Executive Director.


Requirements


Skills, Education and Experience:


Requirements for this position include:


Education and Language


  • French (reading comprehension): Intermediate (preferred)
  • French (oral expression): Advanced (preferred)
  • Overdose Intervention In-House Training
  • Training, certification or experience in a peer support role an asset
  • French (oral comprehension): Advanced (preferred)
  • High School or post-secondary education is an asset
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written
  • Under the Centre’s designation to provide French Language Services this position is not designated.
  • First Aid and CPR (level C) Certification In-House
  • No educational requirements as this position is designated for people with lived experience


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities


  • Dependable, respectful, non-judgmental
  • Ability to work under stress with multiple demands
  • Ability to come to work on time
  • Current or past experience with drug use or street level sex work
  • Ability to work within a mainstream health care service
  • Ability to work within the mandate and policies and procedures of the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre and the Oasis Program
  • Experience as a committee member of volunteer for community events (i.e. Overdose Awareness Day, Drug User memorial, NESI, DUAL, Overdose Prevention Ottawa, P.O.W.E.R, etc.)
  • Experience working within a harm reduction approach
  • Ability to work for a minimum of 3 continuous hours in a fast-paced environment
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of the barriers and stigma experienced by people who use drugs accessing health and social services
  • Effective communication skills
  • Respects and values the diversity of communities and individuals
  • Sensitivity and alertness to signs of a client in crisis. Ability to recognize signs of distress (overdose, mental health crisis, etc.)


Benefits


In lieu of benefits, 4% vacation pay is added to the hourly rate. We provide our employees the opportunity to enroll in our Pension Plan (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan - HOOPP).

Hours of work will be developed in collaboration with the successful candidate to ensure a healthy work-life balance. A schedule of work will be based on the Centre’s hours of operation and program requirements.


An offer of employment will be conditional upon the candidate completing a criminal reference check, verification of educational requirement for this position and linguistic profile to the satisfaction of the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre.
