What’s it like working as a Team Lead, Data Platform Engineering?

As a team lead, you will be involved in leading an engineering team that designs and builds tooling and frameworks as a platform as a service (PaaS) to Questrade’s Product, Analytics and Data Sciences teams, using technologies such as BigQuery, Airflow, Kubernetes, Dataflow.

Streamlining this process and providing Golden Paths, it will improve the productivity of engineering teams developing and deploying Data Products that support critical business initiatives. This includes implementing Infrastructure as Code solutions, GitOps, and CI/CD, as well as synchronizing between the different development teams and identifying current platform needs.

The ideal candidate for this position is experienced in designing and developing large-scale distributed systems, experience with data products on Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, and Airflow, and familiarity with DevOps best practices and CI/CD tools.

• Design and build scalable and reliable data infrastructure, tooling, CI/CD Pipelines to improve the productivity of Questrade’s product, analytics and Data Sciences teams, using technologies such as BigQuery, Airflow, Kubernetes, Dataflow.
• Assist teams with sharing knowledge and lessons learned with others in the organization.
• Assume responsibility for the ongoing architecture and user experience design compliance of the data platform.
• Support team members in defining technical requirements to facilitate design, development, testing, implementation and ongoing support of applications within scoped teams.
• Provide operational support for the platform, ensuring it is scalable, reliable, and meets the needs of the company.
• Ensure the team works in compliance with the documented processes and procedures.
• Lead the hiring efforts within scoped teams. Assist with the technical screening of new team members joining engineering / architecture teams.
• Be an active voice in defining and implementing best practices, standards and procedures including code quality and delivery methodologies. Help improve the engineering team’s process and culture.
• Plan and coordinate team on-call schedules to and meet data platform’s SLO’s.
• Work with stakeholders in planning quarterly program increment objectives, and together with your own team breakdown into achievable sprint objectives within the quarter.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to team members to help them grow in their careers.
• Apply significant knowledge of the technology industry trends to help Questrade to improve and build innovative products.
• Be actively involved in designing new data platform features and functionality, improving scalability and maintainability.

So are YOU our next Team Lead, Data Platform Engineering? You are if…

• Knowledge, understanding, and hands-on experience with container technologies, like Docker runtime and Kubernetes orchestration.
• Experience working with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Cloud Deployment Manager.
• Experience with and/or exposure to a variety of datastores (relational, NoSQL, data warehouse solutions)
• Exposure to the full software development life cycle, including design, configuration, integration, testing and support including, but not limited to, gathering requirements, designing the future state solution, the development work breakdown, as well as supporting quality assurance and post-production efforts.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in software engineering and/or data engineering
• Demonstrated experience supporting at least one of the predominant public clouds (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
• Have great interpersonal, verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with multiple levels of stakeholders.
• Ability to write clean code in at least one language (e.g., Python, Golang, C++.)
• Excellent time-management and organizational abilities that facilitate structured teamwork.
• Have a deep understanding of CI/CD concepts, experience with building CI/CD pipelines, ideally with Gitlab CI.
• Strong documentation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong working knowledge of relational databases and query authoring (SQL).

Additional Kudos If You…

• Experience with designing, implementing and deploying ML applications / MLOps
• Experience with data products on Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, and Airflow/Cloud Composer
• A good understanding of Cloud Security, specifically IAM Roles & Policies, Security Groups and Encryption keys
• Experience in high security/regulated environment like financial industry
• Full-stack development or product engineering experience
• Experience working with very high-scale data infrastructure.
