Position Description: Stewardship Coordinator I – Good Neighbours

HAT’s Stewardship Coordinator I – Good Neighbours Program position is the lead of HAT’s Good Neighbours Habitat Stewardship Program. The role is responsible for cultivating new partnerships, collaborations, and working relationships with private property owners, community groups, Indigenous communities, land managers, knowledge holders, government agencies and others to further practice good ecological stewardship including for ecosystems in general, as well as specific species-at-risk.
1.0 FTE – 37.5 hours per week
Compensation: $23.00 to $26.50 per hour (commensurate with candidate experience, wages currently under Board review) plus:

Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) is a Victoria-based land trust working with our community to protect, conserve, and steward habitats within the Capital Regional District (CRD). HAT operates in the traditional and unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən, W̱SÁNEĆ, SC’IȺNEW, and T'Sou-ke Nations, and we recognize that our work is intrinsically linked to Indigenous stewardship of these territories, both past and ongoing. Our mission is to conserve natural spaces on southern Vancouver Island and the southern Gulf Islands through legal protection of private land, restoration, education, and stewardship programs. HAT focuses on building partnerships to accomplish our mission. We work closely and collaboratively with community organizations, government, individual property owners, and Indigenous communities to achieve effective conservation outcomes.

Qualification Criteria
- Familiarity with a diversity of community-based approaches to stewardship;
- Willing and able to undertake professional development and training as appropriate.
- Proficiency in dealing with news media (writing and managing press releases and media events; pitching stories to journalists);
- Ability to cultivate, maintain, and sustain long-term partnerships built on mutual respect and trust by finding common ground;
- Strategic, independent, rational thinker and creative problem-solver who seeks out evidence when forming opinions and making decisions;
- Ability to research, understand and interpret scientific articles and translate to a general audience;
- Well-developed computer skills and ability to effectively use MS Office technology and software (eg: MS Word, Outlook, Excel, Sharepoint, etc);
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, ability to interact with individuals at all levels inside the organization and in the broader community in an approachable and professional manner;
- Ability to work collaboratively to plan and execute projects (set and achieve realistic goals, manage multiple concurrent projects through prioritization and scheduling, and adapt to changing circumstances);
- Passion for the environment and solid knowledge of the local biocultural ecology of HAT’s working area, and working knowledge of local conservation;
- Committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, with knowledge and respect for the process of reconciliation and/or decolonization of the Indigenous territories across the region;
- Post-secondary accreditation in an applicable field of study, or relevant experience in a related field;
- Willing and able to work occasional irregular hours including some evenings and weekends; and
Assets:
- Other diverse skills that would be helpful include report writing, public relations, GIS, data management, education/interpretation, volunteer coordination and event management;
