Job Description
For 60 years the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) has been building a better childhood for all.


We are seeking 2 experienced researchers to play a leading role in the development and growth of the NCB research team.


1 x Senior Research & Development Manager: permanent contract - London based


1 x Senior Research & Development Manager: maternity cover (9-12 months with the possibility of being made permanent depending on funding), London or Belfast based

Salary: London £51,478, Belfast £47,665.


Other benefits include 30 days holiday plus bank holidays (and an additional 3 days leave for Christmas org-wide shut down).


Post Conditions: 35 Hours a week/Full-time


NCB promotes a hybrid, flexible way of working. Staff can work remotely for part of the week if they wish and in the office or face to face for 2 days per week


The post holders will lead on key programmes of evidence and evaluation work and be accountable for its quality delivery. This is an exciting opportunity to play a significant role in a growing team that works across the justice, health, education and social care systems on behalf of a range of statutory, academic, voluntary and community sector funders.

Key Accountabilities


  • Disseminating findings from NCB research projects to inform and influence practice and policy development for children, young people and families
  • Raising the profile of NCB research and the team including contributing to the development of marketing and media content
  • Providing research input and expertise into cross organisational business development
  • Building and maintaining close links with other departments of NCB and coordinating their input into research team activity
  • Proactively identifying and establishing income generation opportunities through building and nurturing effective relationships with external partners across the academic, statutory and voluntary sectors
  • Providing direct line management to roles including leading the supervision and appraisal process for those team members managed
  • Responding effectively to opportunities for income generation and developing high quality research and evaluation bids that adhere to required specifications
  • Leading the delivery and management of research and evaluation projects going on across the team to ensure that NCB quality standards and the needs of funders are met


Person Specification


  • Evidence of experience in project management - successfully managing research, projects including managing budgets and staff
  • Extensive experience in leading and delivering large-scale projects either specialising in one discipline, or across a range of disciplines, including but not limited to evidence synthesis, complex mixed-method evaluations, experimental designs.
  • Ability to bring together and work across groups of stakeholders with differing views, to build consensus and facilitate and lead group activities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: the ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing including presenting complex research findings and evidence in clear language and for a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience of working strategically, collaboratively and in partnership with a range of agencies and stakeholders.
  • Evidence of developing high quality bids and applications to secure research funds
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of research and evaluation work that focuses on improving the lives of children, young people and families
  • Evidence of a strong research publication history including papers and journal articles, policy and practice focused reports
