Your Challenge
Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.
We are looking for a Research Associate in the Electrical Power Measurements Team to support our Metrology Research Centre. The Research Associate (RA) would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
The selected candidate will work on a multidisciplinary research project led by the Metrology Research Centre in collaboration with the Aerospace Research Centre, the Energy, Mining and the Environment Research Centre from NRC and the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, ON, Canada. The selected candidate will conduct research independently in the high voltage lab of the Metrology Research Centre and gain hands-on experience in the high voltage testing and measurements under the mentorship of a researcher from Metrology, along with the support of researchers in the team from the three NRC researcher Centres and the University of Waterloo. The research team has a wide spectrum of expertise in the emerging fields of high voltage engineering, metrology, transportation electrification, aerospace engineering, smart grid and artificial intelligence. The project is expected to address emerging challenges in the areas of electrified transportation and grid modernization. The project aims to ensure, through reliable diagnostic measurements and artificial intelligence, the reliability of high voltage insulation systems in electrified powertrains of multimodal electrified transportation and power system apparatus, thereby enabling greening of transportation sector and grid modernization. The selected candidate is expected to develop novel testing, measurement techniques and AI-based diagnostics of key high voltage insulation systems and technologies for multimodal electrified transportation and grid modernization. In addition, the selected candidate is expected to work with research team on refereed publication, technical reports and/or patents (if applicable) as the project progresses.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD in Electrical Engineering focused in high voltage engineering research as demonstrated by thesis work and/or publications within the last five years or you expect to receive the degree within the next six months.

Experience
  • Experience in high voltage testing and diagnostic measurements of high voltage equipment and/or insulation materials; and
  • Experience in safe operation of high voltage equipment and working with high voltages a high voltage laboratory environment.

Compensation
The intent of this hiring action is to staff through the Research Associate (RA) Program at the AsRO level, which is an early-career level position with a salary range of $74,230 to $103,093.
NOTE: Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $74,230.
