Job Summary


The Faculty of Applied and Technical Studies invites applications for a qualified Program Assistant to join our Culinary program.


The Program Assistant, Culinary Program, is responsible for supporting the learning environment within all programs in the Culinary Department. The Assistant provides support to faculty including ensuring compliance with safety procedures and safe culinary practices.


The Assistant undertakes all duties related to providing ongoing support to culinary students and works under the guidance and direction of the culinary instructors.


The Program Assistant is responsible for food storage and stock inventory, program preparations, food safety requirements, lab cleanliness, cafeteria, and dining room operations ensuring that all culinary equipment is kept in good working order.


The Program Assistant


  • Prepares for lessons under the guidance and direction of culinary instructors including preparing recipes, ensuring equipment is in good working order, and that students have appropriate small wares.
  • Participates in committees and project teams as required.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position.
  • Oversees and assists with clean-up duties.
  • Manages Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Coordinates logistics related to catering clients as directed by instructor.
  • Distributes menus and marketing material appropriately, as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness and order of all fridges, freezers, and dry stores; ensures that materials, equipment, and supplies are prepared and available for students and instructors as required.
  • Ensures all temperature checks are completed at the appropriate times in compliance with Fraser Health Authority guidelines.
  • Orders and maintains monthly food and supplies as requested by instructors; maintains inventory; receives shipments of goods related to the discipline, unpacks in a timely manner.
  • Responds to various inquiries by faculty, staff and students regarding program related items in collaboration with the instructor.
  • Assists with data-entry related to cash received from cafeteria sales, received shipments of cooking supplies, and invoices.
  • Orders, receives, and distributes uniforms for all classes.
  • Collaborates effectively as a team member, including sharing information, cross training, and interpersonal cooperation.
  • Demonstrates respect for all members of the UFV community and proactively works to create an environment of inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Performs cashier duties during peak volume periods busy times of the day and provides coverage for the during Support Clerk if and as required.
  • Communicates in a respectful and professional manner with all members of the team, department, University community and external partners.
  • Supports the delivery of course content in collaboration with the instructor, sets up space and materials according to lesson plans.
  • Assists instructors with practical demonstrations and technical instruction as directed, along with supervising students in the culinary areas in the absence of an instructor.
  • Engages in learning and activities related to actioning indigenization and understanding the impact of colonialism and the purpose of reconciliation.
Qualifications:


  • Must possess practical fire training / extinguisher knowledge.
  • Completion of grade 12 and Red Seal qualification – Cook.
  • Basic computer proficiency required, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be highly motivated, detail oriented, able to prioritize tasks and efficiently accomplish goals and objectives.
  • WHMIS certification required.
  • Good manual dexterity and physical fitness sufficient for lifting product up to 25 kg.
  • Food Safe Level 1 required.
  • Able to problem solve and function effectively in a fast-paced diverse work environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, superior time management and organizational skills are required.
  • Able to work independently with multiple deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Three (3) years related experience, preferably in a post-secondary teaching environment.
  • Good working knowledge of culinary tools, equipment, and supplies.
