CBC Newfoundland & Labrador is looking for a Producer in Happy Valley Goose Bay, Labrador. This producer will be responsible for leading the Labrador Morning team and producing a daily 3 hour radio show.
As an experienced Producer you will participate in developing, producing and presenting editorial content, creative storytelling and finding great guests for the show. You will have a keen understanding of storytelling with audio and the evolving expectations of the audience. Reporting to the Senior Producer of Programming, you have sharp editorial skills with clear news instincts and an appetite for daily journalism. You have an understanding of storytelling for multiple formats and can help the team deliver a compelling, informative show that reflects the people of Labrador.
You are a producer who’s focused on the audience and what they need. You know how to engage new, more diverse and younger audiences familiar with digital and social media conventions and storytelling. You are connected to or have an understanding of indigenous communities and their way of life.
You personally have a sense of adventure and a love of open sky. You believe in a more modern inclusive approach to journalism and want to experiment to create a dynamic program.
The successful candidate will lead a 5 person team who is closely connected to the community. The show informs, entertains and speaks to the people of Labrador. Your job is to enhance the connection and grow the audience by reaching underrepresented communities.
You are not alone, the producer connects daily with the peers and leaders through the province. You will have the opportunity to take CBC training and learn from some of the best in the business.
CBC offers access to training, mentorship and career development over time to employees along with a structured onboarding process. There are also several Employee Resource Groups at CBC.
Key Tasks
  • Lead the editorial team in Happy Valley Goose Bay. (assign, vet, guide and collaborate).
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  • Communicate with other producers and leaders within the province.
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  • Research, write and produce original story ideas for current affairs, text, social with potential for video platforms that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts.
  • Occasionally present stories on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Deliver exclusive and enterprise material on a regular basis.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, plan features and coordinate long-term coverage.
  • Deal with certain facility issues. (ie. contact contractors when issues arise)
As a Current Affairs Producer, you will bring the following skills and experience to the CBC:
  • Deep knowledge of and connection to the equity-seeking communities across mainland Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Strong leadership skills with a flair for outside the box thinking.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Ability to assign, manage and motivate staff, coordinate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.
  • Experience and proven ability to tell news stories in compelling and innovative ways.
  • Strong audio editing and storytelling experience
  • Strong understanding of demonstrative live storytelling techniques.
  • Minimum three years recent experience in a daily news environment
  • Ability to adapt to ongoing technical demands such as desktop editing, assisting with daily lineup, social media posts and knowledge of field gathering tools and applications.
  • Strong journalistic skills.
  • Ability to balance the big picture creative thinking with the “daily grind” of producing a daily current affairs (radio) program. This is a very hands-on position.
  • Strong team player.
  • Strong vetting ability.
  • Ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information.
  • Strong presentation and reporting skills, with the ability to go live from remotes.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends
  • High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Ability to incorporate breaking news into a live broadcast.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong reporting, presentation and broadcast writing skills.
  • Excellent general knowledge about Newfoundland and Labrador provincial and civic politics, demographics, geography, and current issues.
