English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Instructor (Sessional) Fall 2023

Position Overview

The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching the following EAP course:

• ENGL 099 – Academic Preparation – Advanced: ENGL 099 is a multidisciplinary course designed to prepare students for post-secondary course materials. The content of the course includes readings in philosophy, literature, film studies, and controversial issues.

Students are taught to apply their language skills to the course content; and are expected to convey their understandings of this material through composing oral presentations, literary critiques, argumentative essays, and research papers.

Our ideal candidate will have a passion for instructing, assisting students’ acquisition of learning outcomes, and applying active learning strategies within the classroom.

Schedule

Monday/Wednesday from 8:30 am – 11:20 am and Friday from 8:30 am – 12:20 pm

Qualifications For Eap Instructor

• Experienced with all Microsoft Office programs and applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, etc.)
• Two years of experience teaching the same or similar courses at another BC post-secondary institution
• Strong Proficiency in English
• Proficient with educational technology, including databases and online learning environments
• Excellent instructional capability
• Minimum of a Master’s Degree in English/EAP or equivalent
• Knowledge, of course, learning outcomes an asset
• Able to maintain professionalism and friendliness when working with others
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Able to demonstrate success in innovative or student-centered teaching techniques on a Zoom/Canvas platform

Our academic preparation courses prepare students for the many challenges faced in university level studies. Students enrolled in our university level courses may work towards a 2-year Associate of Arts Degree or Associate of Science Degree, awarded by Alexander College. Students wishing to continue their studies further can transfer their credits to many other institutions listed on the BC transfer guide. Our students regularly transfer to and complete bachelor’s degrees from the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria, among other institutions.
