What is the opportunity?

As a senior leader within the Private Markets group at RBC Global Asset Management (RBC GAM), the role will share overall responsibility for the management and oversight of the mortgage fund platform, have responsibility for RBC GAM’s existing mortgage funds and contribute to the development of the mortgage platform’s future growth. RBC GAM views its mortgage fund platform as a key component of the development of its scalable, broad, and comprehensive private market investment platform. The successful candidate will have direct experience in the mortgage investment sector, preferably across a broad credit risk spectrum. Given that a central component of the role is working with RBC’s commercial lending network, the candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work with internal and external investment partners. From a client facing perspective, the role will have direct exposure to RBC’s client channels across its broad wealth platform (Individual, High/Ultra Net Worth, Institutional, Domestic and Global).

Responsibilities:

Investment Program

• Responsibility as Portfolio Manager of the funds within the mortgage investment platform
• Shared responsibility and oversight of all aspects of the RBC GAM mortgage investment platform, including the development, execution, and performance of the various fund investment strategies
• Identify, underwrite and approve investment opportunities with the support of the origination channels, and to execute on those opportunities, having considered portfolio fit and risk-return benefits

Client Distribution

• Work with the client service teams to deliver a comprehensive standard of communication support to the individual clients, institutional clients, and internally managed solutions
• Work with distribution partners to ensure that the mortgage strategies and delivery vehicles are understood and accessible across channels and geographies

People

• Contribute to the ongoing education, mentorship, and career development of the mortgage investment team

Private Markets group

• Maintain and develop key industry relationships within the private markets sector
• Represent the RBC GAM private markets group internally and externally, inclusive of active strategy awareness and participation, oversight contribution and thought leadership

Qualifications

Must Have:

• Demonstration of proven investment judgement and the ability to underwrite and price risk
• Ideally has experience beyond the commercial mortgage sector including real estate investing
• Agile, forward thinking, and able to pivot across the investment risk spectrum
• Strong communications skills with an intellectual curiosity
• Minimum 10 years of direct investing and underwriting experience in mortgage investments
• Exceptional integrity with a recognized reputation in the mortgage and/or real estate industry
• Experience across a broad spectrum of real estate asset classes and geographies
• Experience with managing a team and effective mentorship skills
• A team oriented, collaborative leader that can work within a global, matrixed organization
• CFA or CIM designation or registered as an Advising Representative with the OSC

Nice to have:

• Exposure to other private market investment strategies
• Proven fund raising and client facing experience
• Experience with the US CMBS market and an established network within the US real estate industry
