Job Description
The Opportunity:


McElhanney’s Planning practice in Alberta is seeking a Planner to join their team. Supporting vibrant, livable communities is a key focus of McElhanney across Western Canada, and our Planning teams are active in laying the groundwork for complex, inter-disciplinary projects that shape the way we live. For this reason, we are looking for a professional Planner to help our growing Planning practice in the Southern and Bow Valley regions, and to support Planning throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. The position can be based out of one of our McElhanney offices in Canmore, Calgary, Edmonton or beyond with the opportunity to work remotely, provided they are happy to travel for meetings or in person events.


The successful individual will be a part of a team focusing on a diverse range of land development and municipal policy initiatives. The candidate will need to have an entrepreneurial attitude and willingness to learn about local concerns and sensitivities and understand the various development approval processes. Our Planning work extends into other jurisdictions in British Columbia and Saskatchewan.


What You’ll Be Doing:


  • Supporting the planning practice in Alberta and coordinating with planning teams in other branches to ensure excellent project delivery
  • Liaising and developing strategic partnerships with clients, project stakeholders, various levels of government and sub-consultants
  • Managing the approval process for subdivision, development, and land use Bylaw applications
  • Supervise and provide direction to technical and professional staff, as required
  • Managing projects involving community planning, policy analysis and land use studies
  • Business development with new, existing, and key clients


What You’ll Bring:


  • Experience in land development approval and municipal planning processes
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to function in a high volume, challenging environment
  • An understanding of provincial planning legislation, and a willingness to learn surrounding local government policies and bylaw requirements
  • Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners
  • 2 -10 years community and land use planning experience, having both private and public experience is an asset
  • Proven excellence in creative problem solving and solution implementation
  • CAD experience and technical ability with ArcView, Adobe Illustrator and other GIS or graphics programs
  • Ability to prepare and execute Public Engagement strategies
  • A valid driver’s license is required
  • Technical and policy writing expertise
  • Master’s Degree in urban planning, urban design, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
