Job Description

The People and Culture Manager in this growing 90 employee company is a hands-on practitioner who owns our developing HR practice and function. This position is based out of our Annacis Island, BC office and reports to the President and CEO and works closely with all senior leadership and managers.

Stormtec is a specialty water management subcontractor that makes the lives of our customers easier by taking on their water management challenges. When we do it right, no one notices us doing our work – not our customers, not the communities we work in, not the fish in the local streams. Except that our customers realize they don’t have the ongoing headache of water management. We are a leader in environmentally conscious water management solutions for sediment control, contaminated water treatment, dewatering and bypass solutions in the construction industry with offices in Delta, B.C. and Calgary, Alberta.

We’ve doubled in size over the last three years and expect to double again in the next five. We have a young, progressive team of 90 employees in both locations, led by an ambitious President & CEO who is leading the company through unprecedented but sustainable growth. Strong employee relations, managerial coaching, updated people programs and policies and employer brand are key to support that growth.

Once you’re in place, here is how we’ll know that you are being successful:

  1. Within 14 days, have met all senior leaders and managers in both locations of Stormtec: Annacis Island and Calgary office (by video) to build relationships and gain an understanding of their roles and business objectives.
  2. Within 30 days, have gotten to know all the staff in the office and field in the Delta, BC and Calgary office. Based on your conversations with staff, and your insight, lead daily HR operational practices such as performance management, recruitment, benefits & compensation review, internal employee communications, employee relations and management coaching.
  3. Within 30 days, have gone on several ride alongs with Field Managers to several work construction sites in the lower mainland to gain a foundational understanding of what we do. (Sediment Control, Environmental work, Bypass, Dewatering, Industrial Solutions services)
  4. Within 90 days, research and recommend which certification Stormtec should work towards: “Best Managed Company” or “Great Place to Work” and obtained approval and started executing on it.
  5. The President will provide feedback and coaching; however the ideal candidate is self-directed, autonomous, and a problem-solver who can regularly “ship”. Because this is a stand-alone role, the ideal candidate is egoless about doing the gamut of HR tasks from organizing social events to developing HR strategy and implementation.

The ideal candidate is a doer and a planner who enjoys the full spectrum of the HR function. On an ongoing basis, they develop and drive all various HR processes and procedures: developing an effective onboarding program to coordinating staff training and development, supporting employees and managers with their career development & performance management efforts, organizing culture/team building events that grow our culture and employee brand, driving employee engagement initiatives, monitoring the career path program for employees, developing an employee handbook, researching, reviewing relevant compensation to support annual compensation review.

Although there is a contract recruiter to handle the majority of recruitment, the successful candidate will at times get involved in recruitment. Payroll is handled by the payroll specialist.

OBSTACLES:

It won’t be all rainbows and cake. Here is a partial list of the obstacles you’ll likely run into:

  • Our HRIS and resume tracking systems can use an update to extract and massage useful employee related data to inform your people strategy. You’ll need to be fluent with what’s out there in HR technology and be good at making a business case, if there’s one to be made.
  • The majority of our employees work in the field on construction sites, so to get to know them, you need to spend time regularly in the field with our managers and field staff.

OTHER STUFF:

You’ll find us to be friendly, respectful, and hard-working -- smacking more of a start-up culture as we have been in growth mode for some time.

For sure, you have work experience in an industrial, construction or related industry and a minimum of 4 years generalist Canadian HR experience in a mid size company. Although you are a people person who loves engaging and being a sounding board for employees, you have a strong bias for execution. You have created and implemented HR programs, policies, and initiatives that provided tangible ROI. A related degree/diploma rounds out your background. Needless to say you are adept with BC employment laws.

You will be based in our Delta, BC, Annacis Island head office. This role needs to be primarily in office – after 4 months, 1 day/week from home can make sense.

To Apply:

If you’re interested in the position, please submit a resume and short cover letter. Valid Canadian work authorization is required.
