PEER EDUCATION COORDINATOR
Annual Salary: $51,542 (pro-rated)
FTE Status: 0.4 FTE (15 hours/week)
Duration: 6-month contract (with possibility for renewal)
Program Description:
Planned Parenthood Toronto (PPT) is a fully accredited community health centre that provides primary health care services to youth 13 to 29 years as well as health promotion programming, education, training and research to improve the health and well-being of Toronto’s diverse communities.
PPT’s Health Services offer a full range of primary and sexual health care including physical examinations, anonymous HIV testing, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, birth control information and prescriptions, pregnancy testing and options, pre-natal care, and medical abortion. Health Services also includes a peer education program, where peer volunteers provide education, information, emotional support, selected tests, and referrals on a variety of sexual health topics directly to clients. We are looking for a part-time (15hrs/week) Co-Coordinator to support our Peer Education program. This is a 6-month contract with the possibility for renewal.
General Responsibilities:
This position will work closely with the existing program Coordinator to support the peer education program. The Coordinators are responsible for volunteer recruitment, training, evaluation, scheduling, support and appreciation as well as the administrative duties of the Health Services peer education program.
Specific Responsibilities:
- With co-coordinator, maintain client session documentation and program statistics.
- Provide ongoing support to peer education volunteers.
- As needed, provide advocacy and referral support for abortion and prenatal care clients seen by the peer education program.
- With co-coordinator, support recruitment and selection of new volunteers.
- Design and facilitate training sessions for new volunteers.
- Provide education and information to clients when required.
- Maintain regular communication with co-coordinator and volunteers to discuss shifts, service changes, meetings, ongoing training and other Planned Parenthood Toronto events.
- As needed, develop relationships with community partners to support client care and program functions.
- Oversee volunteer-conducted tests.
- With co-coordinator, maintain updated volunteer procedures and documentation materials.
- Participate on the Volunteer Opportunities Committee.
- Participate in agency volunteer appreciation activities as well as ongoing appreciation efforts.
- Provide orientation to new peer education volunteers in their capacity of providing peer education and information to clients.
- Participate in program planning and implementation of new functions or services.
- Provide feedback and evaluation of volunteers in their capacity of providing peer education and information to clients according to evaluation procedures.
Other Responsibilities:
- Participate at staff and team meetings and other activities/meetings related to the agency, as requested
- As it relates to your position fulfill responsibilities outlined by the agency’s funders.
- Demonstrate openness and responsiveness to emerging client and community needs as identified by the agency.
- Act in accordance with PPT’s Vision, Mission, Equity Vision, Values and Principles, and Policies and Procedures
- Available to work some evenings and weekends as required.
- Other duties related to the role or based on agency need, as required.
- Participate in the orientation and training of new staff as requested by Executive Director or their Manager.
- Work in alignment with the agency’s strategic plan.
Qualifications include:
- Experience working with youth.
- Demonstrated commitment to: equity goals and principles; youth positive, LGBTQ positive, and sex positive advocacy; and, sexual and reproductive rights and to being inclusive of diverse sexual and gender identities.
- Commitment to working cooperatively in a community-based setting as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with system navigation for people without OHIP an asset.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills.
- Available to work a flexible schedule, including Wednesdays, some Saturdays and evenings each week.
- 2-year community college diploma with 1-2 years work and/ or volunteer experience in a similar role OR 3-5 years work and/or volunteer experience in a similar role.
- Demonstrated knowledge of sexual health issues for youth.
- Knowledge of abortion access in Ontario an asset.
- Experience in group facilitation an asset.
- Commitment to working from a community development perspective.
- Understanding and support of peer education and volunteerism models.
- Commitment to pro-choice philosophy.
- Proficiency and experience working in a computerized environment.
