Position Summary


Reporting to the Manager of Finance, the payroll assistant is responsible for the regular bi-weekly payroll processing. The payroll assistant works as part of a team to ensure payroll is completed in an accurate and timely fashion while maintaining established Hospital standards and representing the service at all times professionally and courteously.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Maintenance of employee payroll files
  • Safety (patient, worker & workplace) is a BCHS Corporate Priority. The successful applicant will demonstrate good stewardship in identifying, reporting and mitigating unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Preparation, reconciliation and distribution of T4 slips.
  • Telephone/ E-mail/Voice-mail communication and correspondence as requested.
  • Reconciliation of payroll-related accounts.
  • Processing of manual and special payments.
  • Preparation, reconciliation and timely remittance of payroll deductions.
  • Investigation, analysis and year-end reporting of employee pension contributions.
  • Reconciliation of pay registers and bank transfers.
  • Distribution of employee pay statements.
  • Responsible for ensuring timely investigation and resolution of all payroll inquiries.
  • Process new hires, transfers, terminations, retirements, rate and benefit changes.
  • Data input of time sheets and pay adjustments.
  • Administration of pay garnishments.
  • Preparation of Record of Employment (ROEs).
  • Timely posting of pay to the general ledger and transfer of funds.
  • Ensure accurate calculation and payment of supplements, retroactive and vacation pays.


Education Requirements


  • Certified Payroll Practitioner (Canadian Payroll Association)



Mandatory Qualifications


  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Adaptable to change and performs well under stress
  • Minimum Two (2) years of payroll experience
  • Experience with Meditech HRIS is an asset.
  • Apply critical thinking to payroll-related issues and devise solutions
  • A high level of speed and accuracy in processing payroll transactions
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Accounting, Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Minimum Two (2) year business diploma or degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize to meet absolute deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of MIS Guidelines an asset
