Network Design Engineer Jobs

Job Summary

Install and provide operational support for a wide variety of networking technologies, including routing and switching, wireless networks, and voice over IP.

Essential Job Duties

• Troubleshoot, maintain, upgrade and provide technical support and solutions.
• Install, upgrade, maintain and troubleshoot network devices (switches, routers, wireless access points, etc.) on campus.
• Monitor and update our internal trouble ticket system on a daily basis.
• Monitor system resource utilization and performance using applications such as Statseeker, RANCID and other SNMP-based tools. Recommend enhancements, upgrades and changes to achieve optimum performance levels.
• Work on special projects as needed.
• Be responsible for the operational support of optical DWDM infrastructure.
• Active participation in the design and implementation of an integrated infrastructure supporting the convergence of voice and data services.
• Ensure that the DWDM optical network adheres to the defined network standards.
• Work with fiber services providers to review and implement changes on the DWDM optical network.
• Interact with campus Internet providers CENIC and Los Nettos, including reporting and troubleshooting upstream network issues. May also attend and participate in technical committee meetings.
• Proficiency with Layer1 troubleshooting (optics, switches, DWDM, etc.).
• Maintain the optical design and systems to meet the current demand and future requirements.
• Maintain awareness with new network technologies and determine their suitability for Caltech's environment.
• Develop network maps, troubleshooting guides, and operational procedures.

Basic Qualifications

• Be customer-oriented and comfortable working with a user base with widely varying computer skills and support needs.
• Ability to learn any network operating system including but not limited to Cisco, Arista, Aruba and PaloAlto.
• Be able to respond to off-hours incidents as necessary.
• Master's degree and a minimum of 5 years' experience as a network engineer.
• Solid understanding of TCP/IP, OSI layer and operational experience of network routing protocols including BGP and OSPF.
• Able to lift moderately heavy equipment up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities.
• Some travel in-state and nationally may be required.
• Experience in cross platform network automation using Ansible and Python.
• Excellent team player, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including developing, writing, and reviewing technical documents.

Preferred Qualifications

• CCNP or equivalent certification.
• Knowledge of Caltech campus environment.
• Experience in deploying BGP VXLAN and EVPN control plane.
• Knowledge of optical transport systems not limited to Cisco and Ciena.
• Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
