Job Description
About Voyis:
Voyis designs and manufactures high performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights) for autonomous underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments. Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface.
All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo. Voyis operates independently and is part of the Covelya Group of companies.
What you’ll do:
As a Manufacturing & Test Engineer at Voyis you will work on developing processes and evaluation methods for all our product lines. The role is focused on how we build our underwater optical systems and how we ensure they are built consistently and reliably. You will leverage existing knowledge and expertise in high-complexity, low-volume manufacturing to improve designs, procedures, and processes.
The role will sit as an interface between design engineering and production and requires interpretation of and attention to technical details. The goal is efficient and defect-free building with robust testing to ensure the highest standards of reliability in our underwater products.
We are looking for someone who is keen to learn and grow with the role as we expand operations. We are a small team with lots of opportunities to solve interesting problems. Everyone is expected to take ownership and go beyond the minimum requirements to achieve our goals, together.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Be a subject matter expert on functional testing of Voyis cameras, lights, and laser-scanners, understand the design intent, performance specs, and requirements for each system.
  • Triage issues that arise during builds. Disposition non-conforming product and propose/coordinate rework where applicable
  • Manage changes and new processes from engineering or corrective actions, ensuring best practices are implemented across all teams
  • Prepare SOPs and other process documentation to ensure product reliability and that performance and design intent is met
  • Interface with design engineering, production, and our customers to align requirements for certification of our products.
  • Develop processes and define requirements for fixtures and tools used in the verification, calibration, and test of Voyis products. Aim to improve efficiency and repeatability of key processes
Note this is an in-person role at our headquarters in Waterloo. There may be some opportunities for limited periods of remote work, however the job requires you to be here with the hardware and the team that is building it.
Skills you will bring to the table:
  • 2+ years experience with high-tech assembly, testing, calibration (eg. optical systems, electronics, robotics)
  • A proactive approach and eagerness to learn and own your work
  • Strong backgroud in electrical systems. Experience with inspection and measurement tools (micrometer, gauges, multimeter, oscilloscope), soldering and connector assembly, wiring.
  • Engineering or Technical degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Manufactyring or Quality
  • Proven experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), low-volume manufacturing, electro-mechanical assemblies.
Bonus Points for:
  • Knowledge of IPC-620/610, Experience with PCBA testing, handling ESD-sensitive materials
  • Familiarity with embedded computing technologies, cameras and lenses, CNC machining and metal fabrication
  • Experience with testing of EMC/EMI
  • Experience with New Product Introductions, prototyping, product development
The Perks:
  • Health and vision benefits
  • Flexible work hours, lots of vacation, and a dedication to work-life balance
  • Employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning
  • RRSP Matching
  • Profit-sharing within to celebrate our successes together
  • Regular company-wide social events
Why you should join Voyis:
Our team is made up of problem-solvers, passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible underwater. We get excited about building cool stuff and working on exciting projects like going to the Titanic, Endurance (and lots of other shipwrecks too!). We are a small and closely-knit team. Each member of our team makes a significant impact not just on our business, but on our customers as well.
At Voyis we value diversity and we’re proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all. We thank everyone who applies and for their interest in working for Voyis, however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. No telephone or walk-in inquiries please.
