Job Description
LEAP leads the world in the development and sale of cloud based legal practice management software for small law firms on a Software as a Service (SaaS) model. We employ more than 800 people, have offices in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK with more than 12,000 law firms using our software worldwide. LEAP will provide you with the best training, equipment, mentoring and support in order for you to be successful.


We are seeking to hire a ByLawyers Managing Editor to join our highly motivated, high-velocity and growing team in CA. LEAP will provide you with the best training, equipment, mentoring and support to succeed. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of our dynamic and motivated team in our Toronto, Ontario office.


Responsibilities


  • Take a leadership role within the organization and develop strong ongoing relationships with LEAP, and fellow By Lawyers colleagues based in CA, UK, and Australia.
  • Develop a publication plan in association with Head Office for the next year including new publications and the review and enhancement of existing publications.
  • The content of the publications, ensuring the focus remains practice-based rather than academic, and reflects the By Lawyers style and philosophy
  • Working with the team to manage the daily operations and resources of By Lawyers Canada.
  • Review publications on all common areas of law to ensure that the By Lawyers publications are always up to date.
  • Assist the team to manage recruitment and oversee staff training needs.
  • Consider, research and initiate conversations with the Law Societies, and other organizations and attend their webinars and functions.
  • Assist in the development of the organization’s strategic plan incorporating relevant key performance indicators.
  • Develop ongoing relationships with authors, particularly through the use of regular visits, zoom conferences, emails and telephone calls.


News Services


  • Identify and subscribe to all relevant legal news and update services;
  • Ensure all publications remain current with practice and procedure;
  • Draft content changes to existing commentaries and precedents.
  • Refer major changes as required to an existing author and then edit on return.
  • Daily monitoring of changes in legislation, practice and procedure;
  • Timely updates – ensuring publications are updated and ready as legislation is introduced or changed.


Publications


  • Develop reference materials using Australia as the template.
  • Develop ongoing relationships with authors to ensure they continue to enjoy their role as a By Lawyers author and remain keen to provide regular and timely services;
  • Locate, contract, monitor, budget, and assist new and existing authors and existing authors;
  • Research and prioritise with the global team potential new publications;


Customer Service


  • Encourage feedback from all sources.
  • Monitor and respond to client questions and comments through Salesforce.


Internal Reporting


  • Assist in the production of the budget.
  • Report on company performance and identify issues that affect daily management;
  • Prepare and disseminate relevant performance reports as required;


Marketing


  • Participate in sales training days to assist and promote the By Lawyers message.
  • Encourage and perpetuate a strong belief in the product.
  • Attend relevant legal conferences either as a sponsor or an attendee or as a presenter.
  • Draft and post articles and updates in News & Updates and submit to LEAP for inclusion in their community page and the LEAP monthly newsletter.
  • Working with LEAP global marketing to develop a presence in social media.
  • Be available to the LEAP sales, renewals and success teams ensuring they appreciate and understand the publications and how to use them.


Requirements


  • Experience overseeing support functions including legal, accounting, human resources, marketing, information technology;
  • Microsoft Word skills – Intermediate;
  • Experience using legal document management software;
  • Experienced legal practitioner;
  • Strong organizational, time management and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to interact and influence at all levels;
  • A professional approach and positive attitude.
  • Computer literacy;
  • Project management and implementation skills.
  • Ability to organize and delegate responsibility;
  • Experience in a professional services environment including in a management role;
  • Ideal candidate needs to be a general practitioner NOT a specialist in a particular area of law.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and precisely. Plain language expression is essential;
