Job Description
Databases are the beating heart of every business in the world.

Cockroach Labs is the creator of CockroachDB, the planet's most highly evolved cloud-native, distributed SQL database that scales fast, survives anything, and thrives anywhere. Join us on our mission to unshackle teams from the constraints of their database and enable every developer to build world-changing applications!

About The Role

We're looking for an Engineering Manager for our Disaster Recovery team. This team is responsible for backup, restore, physical asynchronous replication, and other related parts of the database. As one of our engineering managers, you will help build a productive work environment for the team, ensuring that resources are balanced and that projects support our goals. The Disaster Recovery Product Area is deeply technical and highly impactful: you’ll lead the team that is building solutions that can back up and restore massive databases correctly, quickly, and efficiently. Providing robust disaster recovery tools is crucial in making CockroachDB customers successful.

You Will

  • Collaborate with managers across teams to tackle people management challenges, and ensure the coordination of documentation, marketing, and product initiatives as we scale.
  • Exemplify our values: aim high and build to last; establish balance; be transparent about highs and lows; and respect. These are especially important as you begin to grow the team.
  • Coach and provide direct feedback to your team to guide personal development and growth beyond just technical skills. Managing performance and ensuring our engineers achieve their goals is essential to retaining a high-performing team.
  • Partner closely with our engineering and product leadership to set the engineering roadmap for CockroachDB and our future products.
  • Help engineers successfully navigate their day-to-day by providing them necessary resources and access to individuals who can help them accomplish their goals at Cockroach Labs.
  • Be excited to bring your technical understanding and product architecture knowledge to Cockroach Labs and learn more about databases.
  • Enjoy being involved in tech talks, community meetups, conferences, and hackathons, and encourage your team to participate in events that interest them. Your engagement helps to strengthen our open-source community and increase our presence in the tech community.

The Expectations

In your first 30 days, you will become an integrated member of the team. We believe it's essential for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology and our company.

After three months, you will be fully integrated into the team and comfortable contributing to CockroachDB’s disaster recovery infrastructure. You’ll manage the entire 7-engineer team, working closely with them and product management teams to understand and influence the product roadmap.

After six months, you’ll start to grow the team yourself and ensure that each of your team members is working on projects that align with the needs of the company and their own interests.

You Have

  • A solid product architecture knowledge and grasp of how a variety of team interactions can impact it.
  • Comfort using programming languages like Go, C/C++, Java, and Python. We use Go on the server side but if you don't know it, you'll learn while you're here.
  • Partnered across departments, ensuring coordination with internal teams (e.g., Documentation, Marketing, Product, etc.).
  • Been exposed to performance management. You understand the importance of building an effective team that can function independently, while collaborating and supporting each other.
  • Experience working on complex technical products and exposure to distributed systems, concurrency control, data replication, file systems, or SQL processing.
  • A passion for building relationships and being responsible for the welfare of the engineering team you manage, including their professional development and growth. We're looking for managers that want to empower the team to achieve their professional and personal goals.

The Team

Reporting to Alex Lunev - Senior Director of Engineering

Alex Lunev is the Head of Database Engineering at Cockroach Labs and responsible for all engineering teams working on CockroachDB. He joined Cockroach Labs in 2020. Before joining, he spent 16 years building transaction processing systems for a number of financial companies. Alex lives in the Bay Area with his wife and kids. Outside of work, you can find Alex wingsurfing in San Francisco Bay or exploring the Marin headlands on his bike.

Working with Isaac Wong - VP of Engineering

Isaac is responsible for the health of the engineering organization at Cockroach Labs. He partners closely with teams to ensure a balanced culture that promotes quality and innovation in pursuit of our goals. Isaac was in life sciences for 16 years with Medidata Solutions, where he had a front-row seat on the exciting ride from a 30-person startup to more than 2000 people worldwide until the lure of distributed, resilient, and consistent SQL databases, along with the amazing technology and culture at Cockroach Labs, proved too much. When not working, he likes to draw, play the piano, and search NYC for cannolis with his wife and kids.

Our Benefits

  • Relocation support
  • Flexible time off & flexible hours
  • Flex Fridays
  • Education reimbursement
  • Paid parental leave (with baby bucks)
  • 100% health insurance coverage (for you and your dependents!)

Cockroach Labs is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer building a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you need additional accommodations to feel comfortable during your interview process, please email us at [email protected].

The annual anticipated base salary range for U.S. candidates for this role is USD $170,000 to $235,000, plus commission if a sales role. We set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location. Actual salaries may vary and fall outside of this range depending on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, geographic location, skills, experience, and competencies. In addition, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. Salary is one component of the Cockroach Labs’ total rewards package, which includes stock options, health insurance, life and disability insurance, funds towards professional development resources, flexible PTO, paid holidays, and parental leave, to name a few! Salaries for candidates outside the U.S. will vary based on local compensation structures.
