Background
The Durham College AI Hub offers industry partners access to applied research and development services, including technical expertise, training, state-of-the-art facilities and platforms, and student talent. Located at the Oshawa Campus, the AI Hub collaborates with industry clients to deliver innovative solutions to pressing business problems and opportunities. Projects include producing and testing prototypes, evaluating new technologies, and developing new or improved products or processes, particularly for small- and medium-sized businesses, as well as corporate training services. Funded by provincial and federal government grants, all projects are intended to assist clients in product development, technology adoption, expansion into new markets, and commercialization of new products, services and processes.
The Position
Durham College is seeking applications from qualified individuals with related industry experience to lead the growth and expansion of applied research for the AI Hub. Reporting to dean of the Office of Research Services, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ORSIE) and working in collaboration with academic and research leaders, the incumbent will be responsible for management, business development, stakeholder relationship management, supervision of core staff, and reporting to external funders. The AI Hub Manager will be responsible for developing annual marketing and outreach plans based on trend analysis and data. The AI Hub manager will be accountable for monitoring and achieving key metrics as required by the college and external funders.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the director of applied research to prepare and submit grant applications.
  • Recruit, hire, and manage employees, assign work, allocate resources, and optimize team performance and professional capacity.
  • Serve as a point of contact for providing content for social media/media releases.
  • Provide technical guidance on complex Artificial Intelligence project requirements.
  • Monitor and assess program performance with a focus on key metrics.
  • Promote and support an environment that encourages productivity, innovation, teamwork, and a high level of professionalism.
  • Build alliances with internal and external stakeholders including college employees, other academic partners, industry partners, funders, and government agencies and community organizations to support Durham College’s research objectives.
  • Ensure that all projects and other activities are in compliance with regulatory and financial requirements, including approval processes, ethics, data management, and health and safety.
  • Organize industry events, present at conferences, and undertake other activities to promote available services and support technology diffusion.
  • Execute a business development strategy to identify new partnership opportunities, define new research projects, and effectively close project agreements.
  • Manage the AI Hub’s financial operations in accordance with college policy and external funder requirements.
  • Promote the expertise and capacity of the AI Hub and develop a pipeline of potential industry partners.
  • Ensure proper documentation practices for all research activities.
  • In collaboration with ORSIE leadership, develop and execute a strategic and operational plan for growing and enhancing AI Hub research activities.
  • Accountable for the initiation, execution and successful completion of funded research projects in the AI Hub.
Qualifications
  • Experience in financial management and reporting.
  • A masters degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, technology and/or related field.
  • Previous experience working with research organizations and/or the academic community.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task and prioritize projects.
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal research funding guidelines, and the roles of innovation organizations.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, and independent worker who also functions well in a collaborative team environment.
  • Knowledgeable of regulatory requirements relating to research and innovation including research ethics, health and safety, responsible conduct of research, and regulatory approvals for products and services.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to present to a diverse set of stakeholders and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and dynamic deadlines.
  • Experience in managing intellectual property and commercialization is an asset.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles.
  • Three to five years of relevant industry experience and demonstrated ability in fields and technologies relevant to artificial intelligence project opportunities.
  • Economic Development Designation (Ec.D.) is considered a strong asset.
  • Uncompromised commitment to confidentiality.
  • Proven relationship management skills with internal and external stakeholders that lead to business development results. Able to engage effectively with senior business leaders and act as a bridge to clearly communicate the value of complex technologies. Well networked with related industry associations is an asset.
  • Grant writing experience and familiarity with research finding landscape in Canada.

Salary: $77,520 - $96,900
