THE OPPORTUNITYHealth, Safety & Environment (HSE) Site Lead - Syncrude

MM Limited Partnership (MML), a Mikisew Group company, is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position ofHSE Site Leadto join our operation at our Syncrude Canada worksite. MML provides comprehensive Client services in facility maintenance, road and grounds, projects, winterization services and industrial refrigeration services.

Purpose & Key Accountabilities

Working in a collaborative team, you will be responsible for the completion of a combination of daily administrative and field processes for our onsite HSE Department. This position is located at Syncrude site, located within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and will support our Long Term Maintenance and/or Turnaround activities. This is a fast-paced, results-driven role in a dynamic and exciting industry.

General Responsibilities and Duties include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance and areas for improvement.
  • Stay current with applicable HSE regulations, industry standards, and best practices, applying this knowledge to continually improve site HSE performance
  • Act as the primary HSE Point of Contact on the Syncrude site, working closely with site leadership, project teams, and contractors to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Support of Senior/Site Management, Operations Group and Safety Teams in implementing, maintaining and executing the Mikisew Group Safety Management Program
  • Provide direction and leadership for the on-site HSE team.
  • Provide HSE training, coaching and guidance to site personnel, promoting a strong safety culture and fostering employee engagement.
  • Support environmental management and sustainability initiatives, including waste management, emissions reductions, and resource conservation.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses and corrective actions to prevent recurrence and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Monitor HSE performance metrics and trends, reporting results to site and corporate leadership.
  • Manage emergency response planning and preparedness for the site, ensuring effective coordination and communication during emergencies.


Qualifications, Education & Experience

  • Clear and precise verbal and written English communication skills
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to demonstrate a personal commitment and positive attitude to the safety team
  • Professional certifications such as CRSP, CSP, or CIH are considered an asset.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook) and various HSE Management Systems (SaaS) and audit processes
  • High degree of knowledge of the following:
  • Alberta OH&S Act Regulation and Code
  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing responsibilities and tasks
  • National Safety Code
  • Strong understanding of oilsands operations and the associated HSE activities supporting skilled trades in those operations
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in HSE roles within the oil/gas, Oilsands or large-scale mining/construction related industries,with a focus on site-based leadership.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Proven working knowledge of:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian and provincial HSE regulations, particularly in Alberta.
  • Energy Safety Canada Standards; (I.e., Confined Space, Fall Protection etc.)
  • Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Act, Regulation and Codes,


Mandatory Requirements

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license with satisfactory Driver’s Abstract (less than 6 demerits)
  • Successfully complete Site Pre- access Alcohol and Drug (PAAD) testing
  • Must be eligible to work on all Mikisew Group Industrial Client sites (no history of Site Access being denied by a Client)
  • Dependent upon the issue date, must possess a valid OSSA, CSTS-09 and/or BSO and/or Common Safety Orientation certification
  • Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification at minimum


Location of work and schedule

Work shift and schedule range is 7 on x 7 off (through HWA/CWW Arrangement), 12 hours per day, located at our operations at Syncrude site. Schedule and/or hours of work are subject to change based upon company and Client requirements. Camp is available if required. Travel compensation is not associated with this position.
