Position Summary:
Under the leadership of the Manager, Employee Health, Safety and Well-Being, the Health and Safety Specialist role creates and promotes organizational systems and programs to build a sustainable and progressive workplace safety culture that is embedded in the principles of harm reduction, continuous improvement, accountability and shared responsibility. The Specialist role plans, develops and implements Occupational Health and Safety Programs for Joseph Brant Hospital, while providing direct client support on safety and health matters.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as the subject matter expert for safety inspections, incident investigations and safety audits to identify trends and root cause, to facilitate the development of corrective and preventive action plans, in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
- Promotes, facilitates and monitors organizational compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations and implementation of best practices.
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive safety learning framework and the development of programs to meet the training needs of our internal stakeholders.
- Liaise with external agencies as needed and lead regulatory visits as required with such external agencies such as the MLITSD, MOE, and TSSA etc.
- Facilitate the delivery of safety training courses and/or provide subject matter expertise input, into the development and delivery of health and safety training.
- Facilitate the completion of workplace safety assessments and provide advice, guidance and resources as required and/or coordinate with external vendors as required.
- Collaborate with leaders to ensure that appropriate program-specific risks are identified and controlled through risk assessments and job safety analysis, to ensure that adequate workplace control measures are implemented.
- Participate in project design/construction teams to ensure compliance with JBH safety requirements and applicable codes and standards.
- Act as a key advisor to internal committees such as the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), Workplace Violence Sub-Committee and Space Planning Committee, on workplace health and safety matters, regulations and best practices, which impact JBH.
- Data collection and analysis, report preparation and presentations, to inform prevention strategies.
- Review incident and injury data for reporting and analysis.
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and work practices in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation (federal, provincial and municipal as appropriate) – including but not limited to: risk assessments, incident investigation and reporting, workplace inspections, musculoskeletal injury prevention (ergonomics), workplace violence, respiratory protection (including fit testing), WHMIS, hearing protection, occupational hygiene and designated substances.
- Develops and maintains health and safety policies, procedures and action plans.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Three (3) to five (5) years relevant experience in Occupational Health & Safety required; experience in an acute health care environment is considered an asset.
- Experience conducting incident investigations along with those related to legislative and policy requirements, providing feedback and making recommendations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret relevant and current legislation required, including: OHSA, WSIA, OHRC, workplace (labour and employee) relations.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or capable of attaining within 3 years of hire.
- JHSC Member Certification, an asset.
- Knowledge of best practices and trends impacting health, safety and wellbeing.
- Bachelors of Science in Occupational Health and Safety, Health Sciences, Kinesiology or a related field.
- Experience working in a diverse, unionized environment.

- Proficiency in MS Office (including Excel) required, working knowledge of Parklane, an asset.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to prioritize and adjust to changing and conflicting demands.
- Demonstrated skills in planning & delivering education/training programs to variety of audiences.
