The Opportunity


Human Resources is a strategic partner, an employee advocate, and a change agent. Managing the employee experience is crucial for businesses – from onboarding employees, to finding the best fits for both culture and efficiency, to managing interpersonal relationships, and much more. The Human Resources Department delivers various services to its stakeholders including: Accessibility, Recruitment, Payroll, Workforce Planning, Diversity, Learning and Development, Job Evaluation and Descriptions, Performance Management, Labour Relations, Wellness, Health and Safety, Compensation and Benefits and HRIS Systems Management.


Under the general guidance and direction of the Manager of Health and Safety, with support from Health and Safety Technician(s), the Health and Safety Co-op is responsible for assisting with/conducting and preparing reports including conducting hazard and risk assessments, safety audits and inspections of workplace environments, equipment, and machinery for City buildings and worksites.


The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:


  • Participate in workplace specific meetings, including consultation with Health and Safety staff
  • Review work conditions and prepare documentation related to hazard and risk assessment
  • Other opportunities may include participation in incident investigations, dealing with MLITSD Inspectors, and conducting noise or other hygiene surveys
  • Conduct workplace inspections
  • Review legislation that relates to the hazards and risks found

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)


  • Completed at least (2) years of related post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent from a recognized academic institution
  • Currently enrolled in or returning to a recognized College or University program in Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management or a related field
  • Enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op Program
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year


Experience


  • Three (3) months of experience performing duties related to the above-mentioned major responsibilities would be an asset


Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • General knowledge of hazard identification, including hazardous materials, construction, fire safety, physiological hazards, and environmental conditions
  • Intermediate Skills include: Organization; Analytical, Interpersonal, Written and Verbal Communication (including presentations)
  • Interpret and apply policies and procedures
  • Basic computer literacy using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio, and Word), Adobe, and the Internet
  • Basic Skills include: Administrative, Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Time-Management, Judgement, Professionalism and Report Writing
  • General knowledge of current health and safety legislation, regulations, and/or best practices
  • Work independently with some supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Establish priorities, meet deadlines, manage work demands, and work effectively in a team
  • Use reason and judgment to develop conclusions or solutions to problems

Other Important Information


Work Term: September - December 2023


Wage: $18.57 to $25.28 per hour


Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm


Location: Wastewater Treatment Facility (249 Bradford Street) and City Hall (70 Collier Street), Barrie, Ontario
