Position Job Title: Health & Safety Officer
Location: Vancouver
Reports To: Campus Manager
Primary Purpose:
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible to assist with planning, organizing, and coordinating, all Health & Safety activities to protect employees and the organization from health and safety threats while complying with all internal and external rules and regulations.
Specific Responsibilities:
The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the University:
- Education and enforcement of the company HSE Program, and all other safety-related policies, procedures, and instructions, across all job functions and duties, including workers, managers, and visitors
- Document and maintain records of injuries and workplace incidents
- Continuous improvement of the safety culture through new practices and innovation
- Prepare and present monthly safety metrics (as per established KPIs)
- Provide consultation and deliver training programs to management, employees, and students on issues of public health, environmental protection, and workplace safety, as well as new policies and procedures, and any changes in BC’s laws and regulations
- Ensure organizational compliance with all relevant regulations and legislation
- Liaise with HR on Return to Work and/or Recover at Work plans for both WCB and STD/LTD claims
- Liaise with departments to send out Health & Safety communications and updates
- Interpret and apply HSE legislation, regulations, and industry best practices to develop and implement an Occupational Health & Safety Program that responds to the reality of the company and is cost-effective
- Keep and maintain records of injuries or workplace incidents
- Maintain workplace safety equipment such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and First Aid Room and kits, audit and assist in ordering and stocking supplies
- Coordinate posters, signage, stickers/markers
- Prepare Health & Safety related posters, signage, and stickers/markers
- Assist in organizing Student Health Ambassadors by providing training and coordinating their placement on campus to ensure vital areas are covered[MA3]
- Manage the Workplace Communicable Disease Prevention Plan/COVID-19 Safety Plan and ensure ongoing compliance
- Actively participate in safety inspections, risk assessments, and investigations when necessary. Recommend improvements in safety standards, assist in the implementation of new changes, and update changes to all UCW personnel
- Inspect workplaces to ensure that equipment, materials, and processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or other UCW personnel
- Work in collaboration with the Health & Safety team to develop, implement, and evaluate health and safety programs, policies, and strategies
- Participate in the JOHS Committee, including but not limited to attending monthly meetings, providing updates, running risk assessments, holding safety meetings, and attending training/workshops
Position Requirements
Competencies:
- Have a demonstrated passion for safety and creating a safe work environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proven ability to organize multiple tasks effectively, and ability to prioritize urgent tasks
- Strong report-writing skills
- Solid understanding and knowledge of OHS regulations in BC and Canada, including WorkSafe BC Regulations and the Worker’s Compensation Act
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to analyze or assess various scenarios and problem-solve
- Physical fitness is required as duties may include lifting and moving heavy objects
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner
Education and Experience:
- Valid Class 5 driving license (an asset as work may require moving between university campuses)
- Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, or a similar field
- Has a CRSP or similar designation (or working toward)
- 2-3 years of experience working in the areas of Health & Safety, or a combination of education and experiences in relevant fields
- Minimum Occupational First Aid Level 1 (required)
