Job Description
YVR is a place of connection, bringing together people, places and cargo while ensuring a safe and efficient experience for everyone. The Health and Safety Team ensures that the Airport Authority continues to focus and build on its world-class safety culture.
Position Overview
As the Manager, Health and Safety, you are a positive self-starter with a mindset rooted in safety culture and efficiency. You appreciate and respect the variety of competing interests and perspectives in a complex environment and thrive on bringing people together to manage through challenges. You are a champion of safety collaboration with all levels in all organizations within YVR’s operating environment.
Key Responsibilities Include
  • Drive a “we are all accountable” approach to safety and a high reporting culture to ensure YVR has both current and accurate knowledge of the health and safety risk profile and mitigation approach across Sea Island
  • Direct planning, development, implementation and execution of YVR’s Safety Management System and its associated programs, including compliance to health and safety regulatory requirements and industry best practices as part of YVR’s approach to an Integrated Safety Strategy
  • Lead Health and Safety Audits to ensure industry leading practices are developed and implemented, and to ensure regulatory compliance through unwavering support of our Joint Occupational Safety and Health and Policy Occupational Safety and Health committees
  • Develop relationships and embed an integrated safety approach across all operational parts of the business including industry partners with whom YVR has influence versus direct oversight
  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of health and safety professionals to build and enhance a culture of safety
  • Advise senior management on matters related to Occupational Health and Safety Strategy
Key Qualifications Include
  • Safety designations/certifications in Industrial Hygiene and/or Health and Safety, as well as TapRooT Root Cause Analysis will be preferred
  • Proven critical thinking and ability to use judgement and make sound decisions to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
  • Minimum three years’ leadership experience in a complex working environment (e.g., industrial, manufacturing or aviation) with a proven track record as an effective and positive people leader
  • Proven ability to drive change in adverse conditions, with demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, communication and change management
  • Minimum ten years' relevant experience in related industry or field, supplemented by a post-secondary degree in health-related science, preferably occupational hygiene; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
This role will require presence on site at the airport and candidates must be able to occasionally work irregular hours as the role or season dictates.
This position is open to both Vancouver Airport Authority employees and external applicants. Previous job performance will be taken into consideration for all internal candidates that apply for this position.
As part of our recruitment process, short-listed candidates may be required to participate in an assessment process.
