The Martin Group is a Kingston based organization with a diverse portfolio. It is comprised of different companies that build and manage Self-Storage, High Density Residential, Commercial Office, Retail, Gaming and Entertainment properties. It also offers Data Management and Destruction Services. Its mission is to foster growth and opportunity in the Kingston community by creating comfortable spaces for living, working, and playing.
The Group Chief Accountant is responsible for organizing and administering the accounting department. They will monitor the financial health of the organization, advise and collaborate with management to promote efficiencies and strategic growth, advise when corrective action is required, and ensure reporting obligations are met.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the regular financial and tax reporting submissions to corporate office.
- Ensure compliance with reporting obligations for the Federal and Provincial governments and industry specific regulatory bodies such as OLG and iGO.
- Assist with the Annual Budget preparation and periodic reforecasting.
- Maintain the accounting software and distribution of passcodes and access levels.
- Train and mentor accounting support staff.
- Maintain the integrity & confidentiality of the organization’s financial information.
- Manage accounting department including payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
- Supply department specific financial information to Directors and Managers.
- Analyze financial information to identify trends requiring management attention.
- Assist with the preparation of corporate tax compliance filings and complete regular tax analyses
- Determine accounting staff required and assist in hiring.
- Provide necessary information to auditors as required.
- Lead the preparation of all monthly and quarterly Board reporting packages.
- Collaborate with upper management and advise on the viability of existing properties as well as assist with the financial analysis of growth opportunities.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual company financial statements including balance sheets, income statement, and statement of cash flows.
- Establish and maintain a strong internal control environment.
Qualifications
Directly oversees all accounting staff. Works collaboratively with the Directors over Industrial & Commercial Properties, Residential Properties & Construction, & Gaming. Reports to the Shareholders.
Education & Experience:
A post-secondary degree in Business, Finance and/or Accounting.
Independent self-starter.
Comfortable taking on a project and managing it to completion.
CPA designation is required with a keen interest in corporate finance and financial reporting.
A minimum of 6-8 years in accounting and financial reporting is ideal.
Skills & Qualities:
- Ability to access & retrieve financial information from industry-specific software such as Yardi, Sage, SiteLink, & Gaming Software.
- A clean criminal reference check.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong communication (both written and verbal) & collaborative ability.
- Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to build and use macros.
