GIS Remote Sensing Research Intern for Climate Startup

Korotu Technology (www.korotu.com) is an award-winning climate startup, with a mission to help communities to monitor, measure and protect 30% of the earth's surface before the end of the decade. We are seeking a GIS remote sensing research intern to join us for 12 months, beginning in Fall 2023.

The successful candidate will work in a hybrid model, with a significant remote component, as well as work from Toronto and/or Vancouver offices, and will collaborate with our university partners to support client projects focused on ecosystem evaluation/carbon quantification using remote sensing data.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to complete supervised master's or doctorate level research with the support of leading academics.

What you'll do:

●Work with satellite platforms (e.g. GEDI, ICESat-2, LandSat-8, etc) to estimate biomass and carbon stores at high levels of accuracy comparable to in-situ through the exploration of 3D vertical structure mapping of forested areas through LiDAR

●Explore different approaches to analyze soil carbon in Canada through satellite-based approaches

●Develop and refine validation and calibration processes through frequent data collection, advanced tree stand identification, exploration of new interpolation methods, and gathering of extra forest metric data to increase reporting and analysis

●Conduct research and develop methodologies for assessing additionality and analyzing historical land use, as well as forecasting forest growth and sequestration using GEDI data and additional data layers

●Conduct analysis on carbon permanence in forested landscapes and their treatment in carbon credit systems

●Contribute to the development and publication of a novel methodology for identifying risks and prioritizing biodiverse areas

●Expand the use cases of biomass and carbon quantification from forested areas to other possible applications, such as sustainable agriculture, riparian area management, and invasive species assessment and tracking

What we are looking for:

●Passionate about protecting the environment and tackling climate change

●Currently pursuing, or planning, a Masters's or PhD in GIS, Remote Sensing, or a related field

●Strong knowledge of GIS software and remote sensing tools, such as ArcGIS, QGIS

●Experience with data analysis and visualization using Python

●Experience with machine learning / deep learning models

●Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

●Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English)

●Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team

●Self-motivated and effective in both hybrid and remote environments

●Able to conduct extended fieldwork in forestry and/or agricultural areas

●Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada

●Based in Toronto or Vancouver
