FINANCIAL ANALYST (Permanent – Full-Time)

Start Date: This is a permanent full-time appointment, starting September 5, 2023.

Salary: $72,917 - $85,303

Hours: 35 hours per week

Our Board services a student population of approximately 17,000 students in three geographic regions, namely, Muskoka, Haliburton County and City of Kawartha Lakes.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Financial Services, the Financial Analyst is a key member of the financial management team of the Board and is responsible for assisting in the preparation of the Tangible Capital Assets expenditures, in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) Standards and Ministry of Education Guidelines.The analysis and reconciliation of capital accounts will be among the key areas of responsibility. The Financial Analyst will also use sound knowledge of accounting principles to review and analyze data and generate reports as required by the Board and/or the Ministry of Education.


Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the preparation of reporting to the Ministry of Education, including entry of capital transactions into the Ministry’s capital asset reporting system.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provide analytical data for use within the Facilities Services department or other departments within the Board.
  • Monitor accounts, and project budget deficiencies.
  • Provide support to the Financial Services Department by being versatile and adaptable to multiple task, deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Prepare, review, and report on variance analysis of accounts, identifying trends and explaining variances.
  • Prepare appropriate journal entries to correct errors.
  • Ensure that capital expenditures are properly funded and recorded in accordance with the funding guidelines set out by the Ministry of Education.

Qualifications:

  • Progression towards an accounting accreditation.
  • A post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Finance or other acceptable discipline.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) accounting standards and Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Minimum of three (3) years accounting work experience in a computerized environment, including experience with accounting software (experience in a School Board or similar public sector organization for five to ten (5-10) years is preferred).

  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple work priorities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office and G-Suite.
  • Ability to function independently and as a member of a team, deal with confidential information and manage rigid timelines.
  • A focus on continuous improvement of process and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
