Duties & Responsibilities
- Researches, performs “what if” scenarios, analyses impact on FortisBC and makes recommendations to internal stakeholders on various accounting treatment options for revenues/costs.
- Completes analyses of complicated accounting activities relating to fixed assets, capital expenditures, capital projects and ensures compliance with GAAP and BCUC orders/directives.
- Develops and maintains reports and schedules for internal stakeholders, BCUC, external auditors and others to facilitate analysis and decision making.
- Assists in the preparation of financial reports prior to external release.
- Participates in the design and implementation of new or modified systems, processes, and procedures such as integrating existing accounting systems with new ones, and training departmental staff on the procedural aspects of new systems.
- Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.
- Examines and controls monthly general ledger (GL) balances and journal entries; performs analysis through financial tests for reasonableness; determines correct amounts and investigates reasons for anomalies; prepares reconciliations and associated working papers; examines the requirement for, and arranges for, the establishment of new GL accounts.
- Performs analyses of capital projects and fixed assets, by performing various financial and statistical tests for reasonableness to ensure integrity of financial reporting. Prepares reports for presentation to external auditors, BCUC, and internal stakeholders.
Requirements
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills – manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
- Demonstrated well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to respond to and resolve demanding problems, prepare documentation, discuss ideas and respond to management/auditor inquiries.
- Completion of a degree from a recognized accredited institution.
- Completion of a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA).
- Intermediate knowledge of computer systems and related programs including Excel.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ERP accounting systems (preferably SAP).
- Three (3) years’ experience in accounting at a senior level with strong emphasis on financial analysis and in-depth understanding of accounting theory (GAAP).
