As part of this role, you will actively monitor reclamation operations and conduct field surveys, utilizing cutting-edge electronic data collection methods. Moreover, you will collaborate with the Environment team, supporting them in the monitoring of wildlife, surface and ground water, and the eradication of noxious weeds. This position primarily focuses on fieldwork, providing you with valuable, hands-on experience.

  • Term length: 4 or 8 months
  • Shift schedule: 4 x 3 / 10 HRS Mon - Thurs
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes
  • Term start: January or May 2024
  • Job location: Fort McMurray, AB – Horizon or Albian Oil Sands Site
  • Company sponsored Fly-In/Fly-Out: from Calgary or Edmonton


Key Accountabilities


  • Ensure the adherence to safety regulations both for yourself and your team members
  • Collect vegetation data on previously revegetated reclamation areas
  • Collect soil samples and reclamation placement data utilizing electronic data collection methods
  • Survey reclamation areas and areas of disturbance for appropriate tracking
  • Assist Reclamation Soils and Vegetation Specialist in the preparation and organizing of soils and vegetation data for annual and quarterly reporting
  • Utilize ArcGIS remote applications such as Collector and Survey 123
  • Monitor revegetation activities such as seeding, harrowing, tree/shrub planting
  • Conduct wetland monitoring activities
  • Collaborate with Environmental Specialists, Regulatory, Reclamation Field Coordinators and Academic Researchers during site work
  • Establish control of noxious weeds via weed monitoring and removal
  • Collect pre-soil salvage surveys (ground truthing) data and interpret results
  • Collect wildlife fieldwork data, may include downloading wildlife cameras
  • Monitor reclamation soil salvage and placement operations
  • Assist with the generation of supporting data and forms for regulatory application submissions, reports and publications
  • Conduct surface water and ground water monitoring activities


What You Bring To The Role


  • Previous reclamation or Oil Sands experience considered an asset
  • Physically able to handle the rigors of field work
  • Currently enrolled in your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year or Master program of Land Reclamation, Forestry, Environmental, Biology, or Natural Science Program
  • Previous ATV and/or watercraft experience considered an asset
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
  • Previous experience using ArcGIS collector considered an asset
  • Previous experience in completing reclamation field work is an asset
