Overview


Manage the day-to-day environmental and public affairs operations of the St. Constant Cement plant and Montreal-East cement terminal to advance Lafarge’s sustainability aims, build strong relationships with the plants’s stakeholders and manage a robust compliance program.


Reporting into the St-Constant Cement Plant this position optimizes environmental and sustainability practices through all aspects of the plant’s operations including government and internal reporting, stakeholder relationship management, policy advocacy with government, environmental management system coordination, Geocycle operations, cement production and storage, and quarry. The position operates under the technical direction of the Environment & Public Director for Eastern Canada. The position supports development of a culture focused on excellent and effective environmental management, sustainability, and robust stakeholder engagement.


Responsibilities


Safety:


  • Ensures all contracts and project site meet the Lafarge safety policy requirements for our employee’s safety.
  • Follows and ensures full compliance with Health & Safety policies and procedures.


Compliance


  • Support operations in achieving and maintaining compliance with legal and internal requirements, as well as any business objectives with regulatory or public affairs support requirements, including but not limited to government and internal reporting, completion of compliance reports, management of community complaints, coordination of regulatory inspections and follow up, management of annual and quarterly emission evaluation programs, technical review of environmental reports, and other requirements.


Regulatory Requirements


  • Keep current with all federal, provincial, regional and local environmental legal requirements and monitor developments and changes, assist the plant and terminal leadership team along with the Environment & Public Affairs Director in advocating for Lafarge’s interests in these matters.
  • Advise senior management and the Director of Environment, Eastern Canada, of key changes in regulatory and legal requirements, as well as changes in industry standards or codes of practice.


Environmental Permitting, Auditing And Performance


  • Perform environmental inspections, audits, and investigations in partnership with operations Complete Environmental Key Performance Indicators (KPI) assessments on operations.
  • Prepare environmental documentation for approval, including license or permit applications for new or existing operations.
  • Track and report KPI results on a regular basis to senior management and the Director, Environment, Eastern Canada


Environmental Management Systems


  • Assist with the development, maintenance and further implementation of the environmental management systems and related elements.
  • Assist with the implementation of the ECAN Sustainability Plan


Support To Operations


  • Develop, implement and deliver environmental training programs for operations.
  • Work with operations to ensure environmental liabilities and issues are identified, managed and reported for all Lafarge properties.
  • Assist operations with environmental goals, objectives and strategic plans; help identify environmental improvement opportunities and provide guidance on operational challenges.
  • Assist operations in identifying and managing capital projects related to site environmental upgrades


Environmental Reporting


  • Based on legal and Lafarge requirements, report all significant environmental issues identified during environmental inspections, audits, and investigations immediately to senior management and the Director, Environment, Eastern Canada as per Lafarge Canada policies.
  • Compile area environment data, present summaries and submit monthly reports to senior management and the Director, Environment, Eastern Canada


Community And Team Relations


  • Coordinate closely with the Quebec Environment & Public affairs team including regular meetings and program management
  • Develop and implement strong community relations and stakeholder engagement programs with industry, businesses and regulators.
  • Contribute to Canada Environment and Public Affairs Leadership team in a collaborative and productive manner and ensure communications are well developed.
  • Actively participate on various industry environment-related organizations and liaise with peers to keep abreast of industry standards and emerging issues

Specific Accountabilities


The Environment and Land Manager is responsible for :


  • Overseeing an environmental departmental budget.
  • Participation on Association Committees.
  • Managing permit applications.
  • Overseeing environmental testing and sampling programs.
  • Constructive participation in the Country environment and sustainability program including regular communications.
  • Assessing new regulatory proposals and advising Senior Management of implications.
  • In conjunction with the Plant and Montreal-East cement terminal Leadership teams ensure full compliance with environmental and similar regulations at the St. Constant Cement Plant.
  • Preparing environmental and sustainability reports per internal and external requirements.
  • Managing community relations in conjunction with Plant Manager and Terminal Manager.
  • Managing the environmental management system (EarthCare).

Qualifications


Education and work Experience


  • Minimum 3-5 years of related environmental experience preferably including manufacturing and related industry exposure
  • Minimum technical diploma or University degree in Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or related discipline
  • Bilingual
