Job Summary


The Manager, CN Expertise is responsible for designing and implementing a systematic and comprehensive knowledge management journey for core rail and intermodal business systems. This would include assessing domain areas to determine ones at high risk of knowledge loss, measuring impact on business and defining a plan to retain and grow both domain and system knowledge. This role involves mobilizing all necessary human and financial resources, while ensuring the development of technology solutions that satisfy performance, security, availability and reliability criteria, and operational requirements.


Main Responsibilities


Knowledge Retention Plan and Delivery


  • Review and finalize the knowledge management solution to be implemented
  • Identification of the areas where knowledge is most at risk
  • Identify knowledge assets and define actions that can be taken to retain both explicit and tacit knowledge
  • Map organizational consequences of losing that knowledge
  • Implement specific initiatives to systematically retain the knowledge e.g. interviews, knowledge blogs, stories etc.
  • Manage delivery by external partners, in relation to project objectives and CN objectives
  • Ensure that knowledge is always up-to-date, quality assured, available in a single source of truth and able to be delivered on-demand
  • Coordinate with various stakeholders to settle any delivery issues affecting deadlines, budgets and quality standards
  • Build transition and succession plans for risk areas


Leading Others


  • Provide a positive and welcoming onboarding experience to all new employees
  • Support employee development and help employees reach career goals
  • Ensure adequate training is provided to the new talent
  • Focus on communications and foster collaboration by encouraging teams to work together to accomplish common goals
  • Collaborate with Human Resources (HR) to bring new talent to the organization that will be trained to develop expertise in the high risk areas
  • Manage employee performance
  • Participate in succession planning by contributing to yearly talent review cycle

Working Conditions


The role has standard working conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires minimal (less than 10%) travel in North America.


Requirements Experience


Relevant IT Experience


  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience as a business-IT liaison
  • Experience in knowledge retention and growth initiatives
  • Significant experience in complex problem resolution
  • Experience in driving knowledge and process implementation
  • Experience managing a team of at least 10 people
  • Understanding of knowledge management solutions


Education/Certification/Designation


  • Project Management Professional (PMP/PMI) Certification*
  • Agile Coach Certification*
  • Agile Scrum Master Certification*
  • Kanban Practitioner*
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
