- This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

As part of the Process Automation Team, you will be working primarily with process control engineers and technologists to ensure safe, reliable, and competitive operation of our process automation applications and systems and the operating plant. You will be involved with capital projects and ongoing support activities such as, control scheme performance monitoring, improvement and design, and alarm management activities. You will gain exposure to the operation of world scale petrochemical plants.
You Will Use Your Expertise To:
- Maintain/upgrade plant process control systems
- Work closely with Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations personnel in commissioning and ongoing support activities
- Implement DCS control logic changes
- Work with a variety of automation systems and software platforms such as ABB DCS systems and interfaces to a variety of instruments and PLCs. Business software platforms include SAP, SmartPlant and Microsoft Office along with several automation system programming tools.
- Lead the hazard review process for process control strategies and participate in incident investigations.
- Develop and maintain advanced process control applications
- Be member of project teams for capital projects involving process control
What We Are Looking For:
The successful candidate will have a Chemical Engineering Degree with a specific interest in Process Control applications and a minimum of 5 years’ working experience with DCS platforms. In addition, the candidate will have:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with advanced control software and programming / scripting languages
- Ability to work with software tools to develop new applications and maintain existing control schemes
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances while using good judgement to move forward
- Demonstrated commitment to Responsible Care®
- Strong desire to work with a petrochemical company in a process plant
- A Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Engineer in Training (EIT) designation through the PEO (or equivalent regulatory body)
- Self-motivated individual with good interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to deliver results

Location:
The NOVA Chemicals Manufacturing East Sites are located near Sarnia, Ontario. The Sarnia Sites focus on the production of ethylene and polyethylene and is recognized as a cornerstone of Ontario’s petrochemical industry.
Sarnia is situated on the south shore of Lake Huron at the headwaters of the St. Clair River, and just an hour from Detroit, Michigan, United States.
Additional Information:
- Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
- Relocation will be considered for this position
- Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
- In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
- The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
