Engineer - Mechanical Design And Additive Manufacturing

Background

Modulate is a Montreal-based medical technology startup whose mission is to improve non-invasive treatments for musculoskeletal disorders, starting with spinal diseases.

Scoliosis and other spinal disorders affect 3% of children worldwide and more than half of seniors aged 60 and over. Custom-made orthopedic braces (orthoses) are one of the most common treatments to control the progression of back deformities, support the torso, and alleviate symptoms to limit surgical interventions, and increase patients' short- and long-term quality of life.

Building on more than 30 years of academic research in clinical settings, Modulate has developed a revolutionary approach combining artificial intelligence (AI), biomechanical modeling and 3D printing, enabling the automated generation of braces that are more clinically effective, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing than standard treatment.

The Job

Lead the mechanical design and manufacturing of one of Modulate's core products:

• Design innovative orthoses for mass customization
• Interact frequently with patients and users to iterate the design
• Develop in-house engineering processes following a quality management system
• Optimize 3D printing manufacturing for scale-up
• Interface with AI, modeling and software development teams

The Team

This position reports directly to the three co-founders and Executive, Technical and Scientific Directors.

Requirements & Skills

Preferred: Master's degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering with a mechanical specialization (M.Sc.A., M.Sc., M.S., M.Eng.)

Considered: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (B.Eng.)

Essential expertise:

• Experience in B-rep solid modeling (Solidworks, Catia, etc.)
• Experience in 3D meshing and sculpting (Meshmixer, Blender, Zbrush, Meshlabs, etc.)
• Advanced expertise in mechanical design and design for manufacturing
• Advanced expertise in 3D printing

Additional expertise:

• Experience working within a quality management system
• Experience in finite element analysis (Ansys, Abaqus, etc.)
• Experience in mechatronics
• Experience in implicit modeling (nTop)
• Experience in software development (Python, Matlab, APDL, C++)
