Job Description
Title: Director of Development
Department: Development
This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with CEO
Location: Candidates must be based in a state where The Bail Project currently operates which includes the following: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IN, IL, KY, MD, MO, MT, NY, NC, OH, OK, TX, PA, SC, WA
About The Bail Project
The Problem
There is no place in the criminal justice system where money more clearly buys justice than bail. People who can’t afford bail remain in jail before trial, while those with money buy their liberty. Tying freedom to financial ability upends the presumption of innocence, tears lives apart, and perpetuates racial and economic disparities. It is also a key driver of mass incarceration. Each year, an estimated 2.5 million people sit in jail cells across America because they cannot afford bail.
The Response
The Bail Project is a national nonprofit that provides free bail assistance and pretrial support to thousands of low-income people every year. We are on a mission to combat mass incarceration and demonstrate that a more humane, equitable, and effective pretrial system is possible.
The Model
The Bail Project uses a national revolving bail fund to pay bail for individuals who are legally presumed innocent, and whom a judge has deemed eligible for release. We then provide court reminders, transportation, and work with local partner organizations to connect our clients with voluntary social services and community-based programs. We call this model Community Release with Support, and it has proven highly effective in helping people make their court dates. As our clients’ cases close, bail comes back into the fund where it is recycled to help additional people. The goal of The Bail Project is to work ourselves out of a job by gathering human stories and data from our ground work to advance legislative and policy change to end cash bail and invest in Community Release with Support ( aftercashbail.org ).
The Team
We are a community of advocates committed to ending mass incarceration and advancing racial and economic justice. Our organization consists of a central support hub and a growing network of client advocates or “Bail Disruptors” who work in their local communities to provide bail assistance and help advance advocacy efforts on the ground.
Job Summary
We are seeking a seasoned and impactful Director of Development, who is passionate about leveraging fundraising in order to make lasting change in the criminal legal system. This role is part of the senior leadership team and will collaborate closely with our Executive, Communications, Creative, and Finance departments to set our development strategy and manage and grow all fundraising efforts for the organization. The Director will oversee a team of 2-3 staff with program oversight over donor administration, grant writing, events, individual and major giving programs, and relationship management of high net worth individuals and foundations.
Over the past five years, TBP has scaled rapidly to open sites in over 20 jurisdictions and serve over 29,000 clients. As TBP enters “Phase Two” of the project, there is tremendous opportunity to build on existing success and strategize for how to be most impactful over the next five years. This is an exciting role for an entrepreneurial candidate to assess the current status of development work and partner with the CEO and COO to refine the organization’s vision for fundraising.
Key Responsibilities
  • Development of major gifts program to secure new donors at higher giving levels and to better track, segment, and engage former donors at the $10k level and above
  • Represent the organization as a spokesperson and ambassador in meetings with individual donors, stakeholders, and foundations.
  • Develop and use qualitative and quantitative performance measures to track success of fundraising lines of business and to grow and improve the same over time.
  • Donor communications program, including print and mail campaigns and the organization’s annual report
  • Management of development records, administrative functions, reporting, and data
  • Tracking prospective and existing grants, including drafting and reviewing all grant proposals and reporting
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership team, represent the development team on leadership committees and at board meetings as necessary; make business decisions with a significant impact on business operations; participate in organization-wide strategic planning; and oversee the development of policies and procedures.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the COO.
  • Oversee the full scope of Development department activities, including:
  • Fundraising events, including dinners, speaker series, and online opportunities
  • Supervise the 2-3 Development Team staff; participate in staff selection and hiring; provide internal mentoring and capacity building; and conduct performance management and staff reviews.
  • Board giving and fundraising
  • Lead development and execution of TBP’s fundraising strategy to maintain and grow existing funding relationships as well as secure new lines of revenue to support our work.
  • Manage development efforts in a fiscally sound manner by ensuring that the appropriate systems, staffing, and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals.
  • Maintaining portfolio of existing corporate and foundation partners
  • Freedom Funders monthly giving program
Qualifications
You are driven, highly organized, reliable, and have a deep commitment to The Bail Project’s mission to eliminate race- and wealth-based disparities in our criminal justice system. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable working independently as well as in a team-based, often remote setting. Adapting to the change inherent to a constantly changing landscape is essential. To work in this organization, you will be required to work with people who have been directly impacted by the carceral system, including folks who have prior records.
To excel in this role, you likely bring the following:
  • 8+ years of experience in non-profit fundraising and management, ideally related to decarceration, bail reform, pretrial reform, or criminal legal system reform through a racial justice and equity lens.
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative, entrepreneurial, team-based environment and possess an innovative spirit, sense of humor, and adaptability to the change inherent in a growing organization.
  • Experience building and managing relationships with diverse constituencies including the Board of Directors, senior leadership, staff, impacted communities, foundations, institutional donors, and high net worth individuals.
  • Comfort and passion for working with data to learn and improve, including for donor prospecting and management, performance/KPI tracking, and strategic planning.
  • 3+ years of people management experience, particularly working with colleagues in multiple parts of the country and a commitment to professional development and promoting equity and inclusion.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, particularly Google Docs and Google Sheets.
  • In-depth knowledge of fundraising management systems, individual and institutional gift cultivation and stewardship, and grant proposal processes.
  • Experience leading a team as a unit or department head, or other demonstrated experience operating with great autonomy, agency, and discretion over key departmental priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills, including track record of personally writing / pitching and successfully closing six- and seven-figure funding proposals.
  • Strategic vision; experience setting and meeting short and long term fundraising targets.
  • Experience building a major gifts program to solicit, cultivate, and steward donors, maintaining their engagement with an organization.
  • Expertise in the requirements for maintaining donor information and administrative data using Salesforce (or similar CRM system).
This position requires being able to reliably travel to various locations in the local area. If you will be driving yourself, we require that you have insurance pursuant to applicable laws.
We require vaccinations or weekly testing for any in-person work, and we expect most positions at The Bail Project will have in-person work.
Currently most roles perform some or all of their work from home. The Bail Project will provide equipment to support work from home, but staff must provide their own reliable internet access.
This is a full-time, exempt, out-of-unit position. The Bail Project offers benefit programs including competitive Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Health Savings Account (HSA), Life Insurance, Supplemental Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, Employee Assistance Program, Paid Parental Leave, a generous Vacation and Sick Leave policy, and a 401(k) plan.

Salary: $115-$160k
