Director, Group Security - Position Description
The Director, Group Security plays a critical role in leading the strategic direction, objectives, policies, and procedures for WestJet Group's Security Program. In this capacity, the Director, Group Security enables WestJet, WestJet Encore, and Swoop to operate with the highest levels of security and operate in alignment with WestJet's values and industry best practices and legislative requirements (International Civil Aviation Organization, IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), Transport Canada and Foreign Civil Aviation Authorities).
The Director, Group Security is a key member of WestJet’s Operations team, and they are responsible for all security related initiatives within the WestJet Group. This individual must thrive in a non-routine work environment where the ability to lead under pressure, manage time constraints, and execute complex projects is a key determinant of success. Additionally, the Director, Group Security will regularly interact with employees across levels of the organization and must ensure an industry leading security mindset is embraced by all employees and stakeholders. The successful candidate will demonstrate clear personal alignment to WestJet’s core values and will ensure the company maintains an unwavering commitment to the safety and security of everyone in WestJet’s world.
The Director position is based at WestJet headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, with domestic and international travel as necessary. The successful candidate is expected to relocate to the area.
Key Responsibilities
The Director, Group Security is directly accountable for the following activities:
- Oversee the maintenance of a performance-based Security section of the Safety Management System and Security Manual (SECM) that sets out measurable and auditable objectives to ensure that security incidents and related ethical incidents are investigated and resolved with minimal interruption and in a fair objectionable manner in alignment with WestJet's values and industry best practices and legislative requirements (International Civil Aviation Organization, IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), Transport Canada and Foreign Civil Aviation Authorities).
- Facilitate information disclosure to law enforcement, regulatory, and investigative agencies and liaise with law enforcement, intelligence, security agencies and immigration agencies when investigating suspicious behaviour, security breaches or assessing threats to ensure compliance with security regulations and standards continue to be met.
- Identify, mitigate and resolve security risks to WestJet's people, guests, and assets by developing, maintaining and the continuous improvement of policies, processes and procedures that support the Security Program.
- Oversee the creation and delivery of security training and awareness initiatives for all WestJet groups including regulated and initial training for all crew members along with tabletop training related to serious incidents to ensure required competencies are achieved.
- Develop and foster relationships with law enforcement agencies, Transport Canada, CATSA, and other security agencies to meet the business requirements and security needs of WestJet in conjunction with the Privacy Act and all municipal, provincial and federal regulations. This will include participation in appropriate aviation security committees and associations.
Professional Experience & Qualifications
- Previous experience developing, implementing, and modifying complex security programs within a commercial airline or large, complex industrial organization.
- Ten (10) plus years of security management experience, with demonstrated success building and leading a Security function within a large, complex industrial and/or transportation-oriented business.
- Prior exposure to industry-wide committees, task forces, and special projects in the area of operations and safety.
- Possess a broad knowledge of Canadian and/or US aviation and security regulations, standards, and practices and applicable US/foreign regulations including those of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
- Five (5) plus years of proven experience in a senior leadership capacity.
Education and Additional Considerations
- Additional diplomas, certificates, or courses in safety, security, and/or quality would be beneficial.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
