Position Purpose:
Reporting to the VP, Financial Analysis and Investments, the Director, Financial Analysis & Investments will be accountable to ensure alignment of Energy Solutions and Services (“ESS”) strategy with financial planning, budgeting and investment activities, including: (i) ensuring the accurate and timely financial reporting requirements for the existing business units; and (ii) overseeing the development of financial assessments, financial models and related diligence related to growth opportunities within the ESS group. This role will include oversight of a team of financial and business analysts in the completion of financial/economic modelling at both a project level and a line of business level in support of all current and future of business activities.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Actively participates in the consolidation and analysis of annual budgets, monthly forecasts and quarterly actual results. This includes coordination with various stakeholders across the organization and the preparation of management reports and presentations.
- Communicates to internal stakeholders on a regular basis in meetings or with presentations.
- Communicates with third party developers, financial advisors, and other parties to maintain knowledge of market conditions, or create new project opportunities.
- Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards.
- Participates in process improvement initiatives, ensuring process changes are appropriately implemented, documented and communicated.
- Works collaboratively with Corporate Finance, Treasury and other key internal stakeholders to develop and enable financing strategies to support the continued growth of both current and future lines of business.
- Obtains internal approvals to allow projects to progress, including processing PRs/POs/SES documents, initiating documentation, preparing project for Development Committee approval, and handover to business unit leader.
- Participates in the drafting of internal reports and presentations according to established deadlines and applicable policies.
- Provides support to the EVP in various related activities and projects
- Builds complex and flexible financial models to evaluate investment opportunities and financing proposals for projects, as well as to improve the quality and transparency of financial results and forecasts and to facilitate ad hoc reporting.
- Develops strategic plan and budget for area in conjunction with VP and monitors the progress of strategic initiatives.
- Provides leadership, direction and management during project due diligence by ensuring that critical documents and information are analyzed by in-house experts or consultants and provides support to the development team by evaluating the financial impact of various possible scenarios.
- Carries out financial and strategic analysis to evaluate growth opportunities, including valuations and financial assessments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists with the integration of newly acquired or developed assets into the reporting framework.
- Provides overall people leadership, mentorship and direction through coaching, development, performance management and resource planning.
- Reviews monthly financial reporting and legal entity data to assess asset performance.
- Oversees department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
Education & Specialized Knowledge
- Extensive knowledge of the energy and utility industries in Ontario, and more broadly, Canada/North America
- Strong / Expert level in excel specifically in developing complex financial models
- Finance or Commerce Degree, MBA, and a Financial or Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA, CBV, CFA)
- Solid accounting knowledge and thorough understanding of IFRS and consolidation rules
- Post-secondary education in Business Administration
Experience
- 5-7 years in a leadership role
- Experience with managing multi-year budgets, forecasting, strategy design and analysis, developing proposals, briefings and submissions.
- Expert Experience in financial modelling
- Knowledge of present and anticipated industry trends and practices
- A minimum of ten years’ progressive experience in financial analysis, management reporting, and accounting within a large organization in the energy sector.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies
- Ability to adapt in order to work effectively in changing situations, and with diverse individuals and groups
- Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to influence and to manage contractual arrangements
- Superior ability to lead change and engage, develop and motivate teams
- Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
- Superior analytical skills, with the ability to critically analyze complex information and evaluate the long-term impact and risks of decisions
- Superior written, presentation and facilitation skills, with the ability to organize and convey complex information in a straight forward and compelling way
- Strong attention to detail; working in a conscientious, consistent and thorough manner
- Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
- Strong time management and prioritization skills; organized and exercises conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase efficiency or productivity
