Position: Director, Financial Planning & Analysis


Job Type: Full Time Permanent


Schedule: Monday-Friday

Location: Vaughan, ON


Purpose:


This role is responsible for UNFI Canada’s budgeting and forecasting processes, and all management reporting and decision support. The Director, Financial Planning & Analysis provides strategic support for all customer agreements and pricing initiatives and works cross functionally to ensure that all business stakeholders understand economic linkages between customers and vendors. This role works with all business stakeholders to provide financial and business insights, minimize costs and optimize internal processes.


Responsibilities:


  • Conducts and supports ad-hoc analysis on issues as needed.
  • Performs other job duties as required.
  • Leads budgeting and financial assessment of new business opportunities. Works closely with management to assist with the development of the annual budget to maintain accurate and timely submission of plans. Acts as point person to provide financial evaluation on special projects and new business. Assists with M&A activities as required.
  • Develops expense approval procedure that helps the Company to assign accountability to department heads and ensures that expenses are being recorded correctly.
  • Serves as key driver in all business decisions by providing financial guidance and overall business support.
  • Leads the coordination and execution of quantitative and qualitative analyses, including development of budgets and rolling forecasts.
  • Works closely with cross functional Finance team (AP, AR, GL) to conduct monthly closings, monitors preliminary results closely and ensures accuracy. Identifies areas of concern and works with team to resolve before the month close is complete. Develops and maintains process to review month end data with key stake holders in the Company.
  • Directs team responsible for assessing the financial results and actual versus forecasted/budgeted activity.
  • Focuses on leading / supporting company’s growth and profitability initiatives.
  • Provides business leadership team with information, analysis and conclusions necessary to better understand its revenue, channel, customers and overall business effectiveness in an effort to improve performance.
  • Develops and mentors staff.
  • Oversees analysis of operating company performance vs. plan & forecast and initiates change when necessary in conjunction with the Corporate Finance function.
  • Responsible for the effective preparation, maintenance, and reporting of internal and external financial records and business analyses.
  • Evaluates and recommends information systems small enhancements.
  • Partners with Sales, SRMs and Operations to ensure that business goals are being met.
  • Interfaces with the IT Department in the development and implementation of efficient systems and controls.
  • Creates and prepares periodic reports, interprets information from existing databases or other key contributors (e.g., Sales, Operations) and provides accurate analysis and explanation of financial results. Provide suggestions to improve results and to help achieve the Company’s objectives.
  • Develops and manages key performance indicators.
  • Provides insight, perception and opinion on growth opportunities and the financial impact on the business.
  • Oversees development and distribution of enhanced financial/business reporting, business case development, pricing analysis.
  • Provides structure and monitors the implementation of financial controls. Works with the Purchasing and Sales departments to identify margin opportunities and helps to create financial tracking mechanisms. Creates a process to track customer deduction (e.g., sales discounts and measure the ROI (Return on Investment) of programs.
  • Ensures that all employees are informed of Finance and Accounting policies, procedures, and regulations, and facilitates consistency at all levels.


Qualifications:


Education/Certications:


  • CPA, CRA or MBA preferred
  • B.Comm or BBA required


Experience:


  • Proven success in change management and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Twelve (12) or more years of senior FP&A experience
  • Experience developing and using business analytic tools
  • System Implementation preferred


Knowledge:


  • Superior analytical and communication skills
  • Understands related auditing and IT functions.
  • Strong business acumen and financial modeling experience
  • Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures
  • Understanding of CPG, grocery and distribution business models


Skills & Abilities:


  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong influencing skills, ability to lead and direct the work of diverse areas without direct line of authority
  • Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, diplomacy, and judgment
  • Solid computer and technical skills with the ability to use all related hardware and software
  • Able to organize, coordinate, and direct projects
  • Strong strategic ERP experience, proven track record in refining and improving systems and processes
  • Strong bias for action and ability to proactively recognize and resolve issues
  • Strong leadership and organization skills
  • Ability to take complex issues and synthesize into key points
