Role and Responsibility:
The Design Technologist role is available to those with experience in Civil Engineering or newly graduated candidates. The successful candidate will perform tasks that include:
-Prepare detailed design drawings and figures for infrastructure renewal projects, including but not limited to alignments, profiles, cross-sections, networks and corridors;
-Perform design calculations based on engineering principles for infrastructure renewal projects, in accordance with applicable regulatory codes and standards;
-Assist with preparing various project deliverables, including field reports, technical reports, summaries, data sheets and graphs;
-Collect field data, compile field notes and photographs, file and manage project related data;
-Document project activities and complete data entry;
-Perform site topographical surveys;
-Attend and participate in project team meetings and coordinate with team members to ensure efficient and timely delivery of project deliverables;
-Organize and prepare permit applications to municipalities and regulatory authorities;
-Assist with preparing contract documents;
-Perform peer review of various types of developments;
-Shop drawing review;
-Quantity takeoffs and cost estimation;
-Other related duties, as assigned.
The Design Technologist role also includes a secondary component of performing site inspection on an as-needed basis, which includes the following tasks:
-Site inspection of infrastructure renewal projects;
-Monitor and document daily construction site activities, discussions and quantities;
-Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations;
-Prepare detailed daily inspection / progress reports and collect digital photo records of site works;
-Interpret construction drawings and specifications and inspect works to ensure compliance;
-Provide required support in the understanding and interpretation of the contract documents, specifications and all other administration related matters to the contract;
-Inspection of material, methods and construction processes of water and wastewater facilities, sewers, watermain and roadways;
-Review and verify Contractor’s payment requests and extra work orders;
-Coordinate sub-consultant inspections, reviews and quality assurance material testing;
-Coordinate Municipal staff periodic inspections and reviews.
Qualifications and Skills:
-Education: College graduate of an accredited Civil Engineering Technology program;
-0 – 10 years experience, with experience with any of the above listed tasks considered an asset;
-Knowledge of construction practices and methodology;
-Proficient with CAD software;
-Proficiency in Microsoft 365, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
-Proficient with surveying equipment, including Total Station, GPS, and Level;
-Ability to work independently but willing to seek assistance when appropriate;
-Strong communication, analytical and organizational skills;
-Highly detail oriented;
-Commitment to improve on a professional and personal level;
-Valid driver’s license.
