Job Description
Administrative New Full-time Position
Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Dean provides academic leadership and administrative direction to Chairs, faculty and staff in the School. The incumbent is accountable for the advancement of strategic and operational initiatives within the School. This individual supports ongoing operations, ensuring alignment with College expectations and procedures and demonstrating continual improvement in results for students, graduates, day-to-day operations, and partnerships.
The Dean will work closely with the Chairs to support the growth and development of post-secondary programs to increase enrolment, both domestic and international, in the School. In addition, they will identify new opportunities that will help meet work force needs which may vary depending on geographic region.
In consultation with the Executive Dean, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, development, delivery, and ongoing review of full-time and part-time programs, ensuring programs are relevant to the needs of students and the community. The Dean is responsible for ensuring that programs meet external accreditation and licensing requirements.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 3 on-site, and 2 days remote.
Responsibilities
Academic Leadership:
  • Maintains a strong knowledge base of School programs, procedures, policies, resources and services; develop strong relationships with college leadership to effectively liaise, anticipate issues and opportunities and identify trends
  • Collaborates across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one’s own School
  • Through the School’s Leadership team, fosters a learning culture in the School, with annual recognition of students and employees that complement College-wide recognition initiatives
  • Provides academic and operational leadership to the Chairs, managers, and staff
  • Guides Chairs and staff in the resolution of student and staff issues
  • Engages Academic Chairs in developing and implementing a multi-year plan for growth and change in programs to achieve the Schools’ goals for enrolment management and continuing education, ensuring the development of new programs follows College procedure
  • Aligns resources and initiates professional development as required to support change
  • Represents the School internally and externally and identifies potential opportunities to strategically advance the School and the College, including preparing proposals to external bodies as approved by the Executive Dean with input from other senior officials
Operational Management
  • Develops and maintains processes to engage Academic Chairs and Managers in collaborative decision-making to engage faculty and staff in the goals of the College and opportunities in the School
  • Engages all parties to support an environment of student success, aligning activities of the School with College expectations for academic procedures, accessibility, and enrolment management
  • Ensures that faculty and staff responsibilities are consistent with college policies and procedures
  • Manages and develops Administrative staff, and in collaboration with HR, oversees the recruitment and development of Schools’ Faculty and Support Staff employees
  • Coordinates the annual budget development process per the Executive Dean’s direction and College expectations and the mid-year adjustment review through engagement of Schools’ employees to optimize the use of resources for ongoing sustainability
  • Identifies changes to existing facilities and makes requests through the Executive Dean for major changes to support the strategic evolution of the School
Partnerships & Applied Research
  • Supports and promotes opportunities for continued professional development and applied research activity amongst faculty and staff
  • Supports external partnerships to maintain positive relations and forward momentum per the mandate of the partnership; identify opportunities for new partnerships to the Executive Dean, implementing agreements as required with input from college personnel
  • Facilitates the implementation of Program Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings per College expectations and attends meetings when possible
  • Supports fundraising activities with the Development Department through collaborative identification of prospects and development priorities; contributes to donor relationship management as requested
Quality Assurance And Continuous Quality Improvement
  • With input from the Executive Dean, takes action to ensure practices, initiatives and resources align to the College strategic plan and supports expectations. Attention will also be given to ensuring accredited programs satisfy external expectations and licensing requirements
  • Works with the Chairs to ensure annual reflections and comprehensive program reviews occur on a timely basis and facilitates decision-making regarding program changes through to implementation
  • As directed by the Executive Dean, provides leadership for provincial, national and international accreditation process within the Schools, ensuring the appropriate accrediting criteria and requirements are met
  • Engages staff in the review of annual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), identifying and implementing actions to ensure continuous quality improvement and an outstanding student experience
Safety
  • Promotes safe learning practices and work environment for Conestoga students and employees by supporting College-wide training initiatives and workplace inspections, and takes action in relation to hazards identified through inspection; ensures attention to safe practices are integrated into all program materials and practices as appropriate
Qualifications
  • Minimum 11 years of relevant experience including management in a post-secondary environment
  • Strong Financial acumen
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Developed understanding of curriculum and program planning, development, marketing, delivery and evaluation in an educational setting
  • Strong use of technology
  • Senior management/administration skills
  • Excellent collaboration, negotiating, planning and organizational skills
  • Strong organizational ability
  • Master’s Degree in Social Science, Community Safety or other related field in the portfolio is required; Doctoral Degree preferred
  • Strong Conflict resolution skills
  • Exceptional leadership skills demonstrated in a senior level role
  • Knowledge of the polytechnic educational structure
  • Human resource management skills
