The Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) department leverages a collaborative, socio-ecological model for student development and care. The cross-functional team includes Student Connection and Community Care (Office of Student Community Standards, Student Support and Intervention Coordinators), Residence Life and Education, Testing Services, and Student Wellbeing (Accessible Learning and Counselling Services, Wellness Education and Programs, and the Health Centre). The SWEL team offer pan-College services across all Humber College/University of Guelph-Humber campuses.
Job Details
Position Title: Counsellor, Sessional Contract
Hours: 35 hr/wk
Faculty/Department: Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL)/Student Success and Engagement (SSE)
Campus/Location: Hybrid, North and Lakeshore
Salary: Academic starting salaries are determined based on qualifications and years of related experience as detailed in the collective agreement for academic employees.
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Associate Director, Mental Health and Counselling Services, the Counsellor provides mental health support in a psychotherapeutic environment, including: conducting initial assessments of student need and development of personalized care plans through intake appointments; providing counselling supports through brief, goal-oriented, single-session approaches; providing longer-term counselling for students with complex presentations and needs through a therapeutic relationship - including the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioural symptoms through psychotherapeutic means; and conducting risk management and suicide assessments, providing crisis interventions, and case management including campus and community referrals.
The incumbent will serve students within a multi-campus institution through in-person and virtual supports to ensure equitable access to service. The incumbent will also contribute to the development and provision of evidence-informed psychoeducational groups, workshops, faculty consultations, and further skill development and training opportunities. Counsellors will provide counselling services for all student populations within anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing frameworks.

What You Bring To The Role
  • University-level credential enabling engagement in provision of mental health / services and psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Education, or a related discipline) from an accredited program
  • Demonstrated dedication and attentiveness to systemic issues, social determinants of health, and intersectionality in serving historically marginalized students
  • Experience working autonomously and as part of an interprofessional/collaborative care team
  • Flexibility responding to high demand for services and changing program needs
  • Effective at designing/presenting trainings and outreach programs to students, faculty, staff
  • Expansive knowledge of relevant community services and mental health resources in the community; strong existing relationships with community service providers an asset
  • Experience conducting client assessments, including risk assessments and a demonstrated capacity to make appropriate recommendations for treatment, support, and risk management
  • Proven clinical experience and the ability of offer time-limited therapeutic interventions based on sound counselling modalities; training in evidence-based, brief therapeutic interventions such as single session therapy
  • Knowledge of Ontario Mental Health Act, the Psychotherapy Act, the Health Care Consent Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), as well as College professional and ethical standard requirements
  • Demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class, and religion within a complex multi-racial and multi-faith environment
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Successful completion of supervised counselling by a recognized counselling professional
  • Strong generalist skills with specialization and/or expertise in interpersonal psychotherapy, DBT, ACT, and/or other evidence-based practices
  • Current registration with a regulatory body under the Regulated Health Professions Act able to perform the Controlled Act of Psychotherapy
  • Familiarity with use of electronic medical records and associated best practices for clinical records and documentation to enable continuity of care
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience providing individual and group psychotherapy
  • Minimum of three (3) years of counselling / mental health services within a postsecondary institution, community organization or health care setting, with demonstrated experience coordinating care across sectors, agencies, and interdisciplinary professionals
  • Strong working knowledge of mental health and accessibility issues and experience supporting clients with complex mental health challenges and disabilities in a youth/emerging adult population
  • Committed self-care practice to maintain resilience
  • Demonstrated research and assessment skills related to program evaluation and assessment of client outcomes
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing development of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging competencies as well as wholistic, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing practices within a counselling environment
  • Demonstrated competence in managing crisis situations independently and working with clients who present with severe emotional difficulties
