Job Description

Title: Business Analyst/ Project Cost Specialist, PMO

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Duration: 12 Months



Primary Focus:

Focused on delivering consistent and predictable cost management across a diverse and sometimes complex project portfolio.Working collaboratively with project teams in the development, management, updating and reporting of project costs throughout the project lifecycle as a corner stone of driving business value. Ensure activities and processes are aligned with the company’s business practices as well as with team’s goals and objectives.

Specific Accountabilities:

Develop and maintain best in class standards and guidelines related to budgets, commitments, incurred costs, expenditures and forecasts while integrating with other project controls processes and tools for use by project teams

Supporting a team of project controls analysts and specialists responsible for developing and achieving specific deliverables for multiple projects in accordance with projects’ cost and earned value management processes

Ensuring each project team leverages the client-sanctioned cost and earned value processes in the execution of their project management activities

Interpreting project-specific business requirements still align with the project standards and guidelines, and ensuring project management standards and guidelines are understood by project teams

Assigning priorities to complex, multiple, competing projects by effectively prioritizing work assignments while managing stakeholder expectations

Driving for superior organizational results by understanding the industry, the company’s established business metrics, and how they relate to the objectives of the organization

Providing technical advice and expertise related to Project Controls Management tools including the installation and maintenance of EcoSys

Developing and delivering training programs for cost and earned value management standards, guidelines and tools, highlighting the alignment between best practices and process

Provides operational support and leadership by:

Championing effective cost management and earned value to achieve business results

Demonstrating leadership of thought in making projects predictable and competitive

Facilitating the client Cost Community of Practice as a cost professional and as a representative of the Project Management Office

Conducting project controls health checks ensuring that the team’s processes are aligned with the company’s business practices as well as with Project’s goals and objectives

Conduct periodic project reviews on various projects validating the cost forecasts by utilizing performance based approach to substantiate the values shared in the monthly progress report.

Providing support, assistance and leadership to internal staff to facilitate business initiatives.

Leading and/or assisting with the continuous improvement of the enterprise’s processes for establishing and managing budgets, commitments, incurred costs, expenditures and forecasts

Other duties as required.

Scope/Dimensions:

Develop, implement and manage business processes and practices related to cost management and earned value management

 The focus is on collaboratively working on complex technical issues in support of multiple areas of the enterprise

 Applies broad business and/or specialized technical knowledge in resolving problems, identifying opportunities and has a keen awareness of interrelationships with other stakeholders

 Develop and deliver training packages in relation to cost management and earned value management concepts, processes and tools.

Verbal and written communication is required to both technical and non-technical staff for the purpose of providing translation of complex concepts into business focused analysis and/or business case scenarios

Represents the Project Management Office for the purpose of information exchange, technical expertise, education, negotiation and facilitation with project teams.

Reports directly to Supervisor Project Controls, PMO

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

University degree in engineering, business or project management related discipline with 10 or more years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 Extensive planning, budgeting, analysis and forecasting experience including a strong understanding of WBS, accounting principles and earned value management

 Experience with oil and gas construction projects

 Ability to effectively manage and prioritize workload in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and resolve issues in a timely manner

 Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form. This includes the ability to effectively interact with peers, internal and external stakeholders. Strong written communications abilities, including good spelling and grammar are essential for this position

 Possess an aptitude for successfully building relationships with project staff, internal stakeholders, and service providers

 PMP/ PMI-SP certification with PMI and/or PSP certification with AACE International considered assets

 Experience with either or both Primavera P6/EcoSys administration, configuration and implementation

 An understanding of the P6/EcoSys application platform and database platform

 Experience in configuring custom interfaces with the EcoSys API, knowledge of EcoSys architecture and system implementation and database management.

Working Conditions:

Office environment

Overnight business travel may be required

Expectation to produce required reports, data and solutions in a timely manner

Occasional travel to field worksite locations. May require Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
