Summary

Gitsegukla First Nation is seeking an accomplished Band Manager to jour our team in beautiful northern BC. As the Band Manager, you will play a crucial role in managing the day-to-day operations of our nation’s offices, operationalizing our long-term strategic plan, fostering community development, and promoting the cultural heritage and values of our community. Who we are

Welcome to the Gitsegukla First Nation, a vibrant and proud community comprising 500 individuals. Nestled at the confluence of the Kitseguecla and Skeena Rivers, just 40 km southwest of Hazelton, British Columbia, our name Gitsegukla symbolizes "people living under the precipice" in the Gitxsan language, representing the striking mountain that overlooks our land. Located in the captivating Skeena Valley, our community offers a serene and picturesque environment that has sustained our ancestors for countless generations. We hold immense pride in our diverse culture, profound history, and cherished traditions, and our unwavering commitment is to safeguard these invaluable treasures for the prosperity of future generations.

What you will do

·Provide strategic leadership and manage the overall operations of the band, ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of programs and services to community members.

·Collaborate with the Chief and Council to develop and implement the nation's strategic plans, policies, and objectives.

·Oversee the nation's financial management, including budget preparation, expenditure control, and financial reporting.

·Develop and maintain positive relationships with government agencies, funding bodies, and other external stakeholders to secure funding and support for nation initiatives.

·Act as a liaison between the band, community members, and external organizations, fostering effective communication and promoting a sense of unity.

·Lead, coach, mentor, supervise, develop and provide guidance to band employees, ensuring their professional development and adherence to policies and procedures.

·Support the development and implementation of economic development initiatives that promote self-sustainability and enhance the nation's financial resources.

·Facilitate community engagement and involvement in decision-making processes, ensuring transparency and inclusivity.

·Preserve and promote the cultural heritage and values of our community through the development and implementation of cultural programs and initiatives.

·Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and agreements affecting the nation's operations.

·Provide governance support to Council by creating agendas and, briefing notes and providing Council and its committees with proper support and information to enable the Council and its Committees to make sound decisions.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

  • Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM), Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) or a master’s degree are considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior management or leadership role, preferably within a First Nations band or organization.
  • Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Aboriginal Studies, Public Administration or related field.

Skill Sets and Competencies

  • Demonstrate public speaking and engagement skills .
  • A strong personal interest and commitment to Gitsegukla First Nation’s vision, mission and values.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.
  • Analytical thinker with the ability to observe and identify underlying issues and ascertain solutions and make recommendations.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and software relevant to the position.
  • Sound decision-making skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Innovative individual who tries to improve operational performance by trying new approaches.
  • Ability to develop and maintain policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of Nation Administration.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and funding programs related to First Nations governance and community development.
  • Valid criminal record (CPIC) check and Child Welfare Information System (CWIS) check.
  • Knowledge of and previous work experience with First Nations Communities and Indigenous Cultures is a definite asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Proven ability to lead and inspire a team, fostering a positive work environment and promoting professional growth.
