Addiction and Mental Health Worker, Housing Focused Street Outreach


Housing Mental Health Worker (OPSEU, Elgin)


Full-Time, Permanent


St. Thomas; Elgin County Catchment Area

We are passionate about ending homelessness, and believe that everyone has the right to quality housing and to live with dignity. Through compassionate, genuine, and thoughtful care and connection, our Housing Focused Street Outreach program works to instill hope in individuals experiencing both chronic and acute addictions and mental health concerns within our community.


As a member of our Housing Focused Street Outreach program, you’ll work with this vulnerable population to build a trauma informed therapeutic relationship while focusing on the strengths and dignity of each individual client. You’ll also connect with community business owners and citizens/passer byers to support feelings of safety and break the myths and extend supportive insights of how, together, we can support clients experiencing homelessness.

Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) completed within the last six months. In order to avoid delays in beginning a position, interested applicants who are in need of a PVSC are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible.


WHAT WE'RE OFFERING:


  • What you'll be making - $27.48 per hour, with possible additional shift premiums of $1.18/hour for registration with an accepted college (OCSWSSW, COTO, CNO, CRPO, CPO), or the TRO, and/or completed Masters education relevant to this position, for a maximum premium of $2.36/hour
  • Your pension plan – Immediate enrolment in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP)
  • When you'll work - 70 hours over a two week period, Monday to Friday 8:00am - 4:00pm
  • PSLRTA Notice - This posting characterizes this position as currently unionized under the Elgin Collective Agreement. However, please be aware that the organization on September 29, 2022, a vote was held as a result of an application by the Organization under the Public Sector Labour Relations Transition Act. The result was that employees voted to award OPSEU bargaining rights for all employees. Until such time as a new collective agreement is finalized, current terms and conditions of employment and existing, applicable collective agreements, if any, will remain in force and effect.

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE:


Direct Service:


  • Meet people where they are at, engaging individuals experiencing homelessness within the community, and building rapport and trust;
  • Apply a person-centred, strengths-based approach, utilizing principles of harm reduction and housing first;
  • Respond to urgent, after-hours needs for homeless participants;
  • Provide in-the-moment support to vulnerable individuals including crisis intervention and de-escalation by working to address immediate needs and providing system navigation;
  • Triage and respond quickly and in-person to urgent calls from the community, St. Thomas Police Servicess and other service organizations regarding vulnerable individuals in crisis;
  • Assess risk and maintain personal, participant and community safety in a variety of settings, knowing when to disengage from a participant.
  • Provide health teaching about mental illness and symptom management.


Service Planning and Coordination:


  • Identify and prioritize the "hot-spots" in the city that needs to be visited for Outreach;
  • Advocate for vulnerable individuals regarding mental and physical health needs, housing and basic necessities;
  • In consultation with supervisor, escalate advocacy within community organizations for individuals to receive needed supports.
  • Participate in shared case planning and multi-agency case conferences as required;
  • Communicate updates for shift transitions;


Education and Risk Reduction:


  • Compile and maintain resources relevant to the services provided for distribution where appropriate;
  • Administer and train others to administer Naloxone;
  • Prepare and distribute harm reduction packages;


Operations:


  • Professionally liaise with community workers and agencies regarding the program;
  • Knowledge of issues pertaining to individual confidentiality, such as consent to release personal information process to ensure individual’s confidentiality is maintained at all times;
  • Ensure effective communication with manager, staff team, home staff or landlord and external treatment teams concerning individual’s progress;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Complete required individual documentation as per agency standards;
  • Complete other required documentation (e.g. leave management, education requests, travel claims, expense claims) within the required time frames;
  • Identify, promote resolution, and management of all emergency situations concerning individuals, staff, and property;


WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO APPLY:


Police Vulnerable Sector Check

We require the following qualifications:


  • Current, clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Minimum college diploma in a relevant social services discipline; (primary proof of credentials will be required during the hiring process i.e. original degree/diploma or official transcript)
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work regularly
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, initiative and team focus, and leadership skills;
  • Effective communication and time management skills;
  • Vehicle insurance in compliance with CMHA TVAMHS policy


We prefer the following qualifications:


  • Bilingual both official languages, preferred; préférence sera accordée aux candidats qui sont compétents dans les deux langues officielles du Canada.
  • Residential/community housing experience and familiarity with the Residential Tenancies Act;
  • Training and/or experience in trauma-informed care;
  • Current certifications in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Standard CPR / First Aid, and/or ASIST
  • Knowledge of serious mental illness as well as best practices, psychosocial rehabilitation, psychiatric medications, community resources, electronic documentation methods, and health and safety;
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health issues, addictions, or problematic substance use;
