Anti-Human Trafficking Day / Evening Youth Worker


6 month contract from start

More than a place to stay, we provide 24/7 crisis shelter and transitional housing on-site and in the community, along with comprehensive services including education, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and after-care. Overview:


In this position the candidate will be part of the Anti-Human Trafficking team, and will be responsible for direct implementation of the Covenant House’s philosophy, mission statement and policies as they pertain to residential care. Assisting with day to day care and counselling to the young women residing in short term transitional housing for survivors of sex trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation. The Youth Worker will be expected to work in an off-site program of Covenant House Toronto. The shifts consist of a rotation of day shifts and evening shifts, Monday through Friday


Responsibilities:


  • Packing up youth's belongings after discharge, ensuring it is properly labelled and stored to prevent any loss of items.
  • Crisis intervention in situations of physical confrontation, medical and psychiatric emergencies, and for youth who have recently experienced trauma.
  • Acting as caregiver; assisting youth with daily routines and laundry.
  • Planning and facilitating therapeutic programming for youth
  • Management of external environment; by supervisor’s request completing building checks and searches.
  • Ongoing assessment of youths' needs; individual informal counseling with youth.
  • Acting as an advocate for youth both within the agency as well with external agencies.
  • To work and maintain the Sanctuary and safety of the House for 6 youth and staff.
  • Liaise with youth’s internal and external supports to ensure wrap-around care
  • Assisting in training of new staff.
  • Maintaining client files, intakes, discharges, case summaries, completion of all necessary forms pertinent to youths' plans.


Qualification, Experience:


  • Minimum two years experience in a shelter or residential setting.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • First Aid, CPR and basic computer skills an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and specific issues related to street youth.
  • College or university degree or diploma in child and youth work or equivalent.
  • Ability to identify, assess and intervene differentially with youth in crisis.
