Program Overview – Woodfield, Morse St. & Bruce, Child Care & Family Services


It is the philosophy of the Child Care & Family Services unit at WoodGreen to encourage the social, physical, intellectual, cognitive, and emotional growth of each child through a balanced use of high-quality activities, experiences and play based learning. School age programs are designed to encourage and help children grow and develop to maximize their individual potential within a group setting. We know that children learn through process and productive play and interaction within their environment. We focus on providing an anti-bias curriculum, working to promote each child's positive self-identity, sense of community, and critical thinking skills.


What You Will Do


  • Responsible for ensuring, in conjunction with other staff, that staff timetables are designed to always provide for adequate and appropriate supervision of children, and to meet all program needs as required. This includes working on the program during all scheduled times so as to maintain required ratios and following shift schedule as identified. Shifts change and rotate to meet program needs.
  • Responsible for abiding by the Unit and WoodGreen policies and other regulations as stated in the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 and City of Toronto’s AQI. This includes maintaining legal staff: child ratios and necessitates working closely with casual staff in cases of staff absenteeism.
  • Responsible for recognizing, dealing with, and defining unusual behaviour and, if unable to deal with behaviour successfully, reporting to the Manager and working with various professional and resource persons as required to alleviate problems.
  • Responsible for participation in other WoodGreen childcare programs as scheduled or otherwise required with at least one qualified (RECE) program staff based on ratio requirements.
  • Responsible for recording the daily attendance of the children, receiving medical information as required especially in cases of ongoing absenteeism, and reporting to the appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as required from time to time.
  • Responsible for the daily safety, health, and hygienic conditions of the children
  • Responsible for the guidance and care of children in groups and for the planning and implementation of daily programs that enhance the social, physical, intellectual, cognitive, and emotional development of children.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining good relationships with parents and guardians.
  • Responsible for working as a team with other staff. This includes participating in the daily implementation of program activities and contributing to weekly planning in conjunction with other staff.
  • Responsible for setting reasonable limits according to the child's developmental stage, and for giving appropriate direction, encouragement, and support individually and in groups. This includes providing extra support for individual children when necessary.


What You Bring To The Team


  • A member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Diploma or degree in recreation and leisure services.
  • Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education and current RECE certification
  • Diploma or degree in child and youth care.
  • Current valid certification in Standard First Aid/CPR-C

  • Ability to carry/lift children and carry/lift/move moderately heavy items.
  • Ability to use professional judgement daily within guidelines established by the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, City of Toronto’s Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI) and program policies. Consults/reports non-routine situations to manager or other staff.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide work direction as required.
