Qualifications

• Ability to take directives from supervisors to take direction on job assignments, to seek clarification on unclear drawings or job instructions and to seek help when problems arise.
• Ability to learn new specifications and procedures through on-the-job training and experience. Receive training in first aid and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
• Basic understanding of machine controls. Use a computer to confirm measurements or adjust computer control (CNC) machinery, such as the Maho machine, which is used to cut metal to specifications
• Capable of reading drawings and using measuring instruments in a high tolerance environment. Read computer-generated profile views of a piece being made in order to adjust the tooling appropriately. Interpret blueprints showing where the holes are to be placed in a piece of steel.
• Ability to work independently and in a team setting in order to interact with co-workers, management, mechanics, welders and machinists, to exchange tips about methods and procedures, to relay new information and safety precautions, to receive instructions or to instruct others how to perform new jobs and ensure that machines are used efficiently and work priorities are well managed.
• Completion of secondary school or equivalent.
• Manual tool grinding experience in machining or manufacturing environment an asset.
• Possess knowledge of the production environment and how to prioritize the necessary tasks for completion. Decide when to reset a machine if it is not cutting within tolerance levels, and how to adjust or to change machine settings to improve the quality of pieces. Decide how to set pieces up when making irregularly shaped pieces. Decide how much material is needed to make parts.

Responsibilities

• Verify dimensions of parts machined using micrometers, calipers and other precision measuring instruments
• Total the amounts of materials needed or the number of holes to drill, according to the specifications. May measure pieces to verify that the size meets the specifications.
• Set up and operate machine tools to perform repetitive machining operations, such as turning, milling, drilling, boring, planning, honing, broaching, grinding or other machining operations
• Prepare etching solution and immerse metal parts or work-piece in etching solution to remove unwanted portions
• Study job orders and interpret blueprints to determine machining operations to be performed
• Communicate and work effectively with co-workers.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment and machinery
