Job Description

Who we are:

Scarborough Health Network is a leading community teaching health network, consisting of three hospitals and eight satellite sites in Scarborough, one of the most diverse communities in Canada. Our Foundation works with generous donors, volunteers and community members to raise funds for state-of-the-art infrastructure and medical technology to support the hospital’s mission to improve lives through exceptional care.

SHN Foundation is raising the profile of our hospitals through the Love, Scarborough marketing and fundraising campaign. The extraordinary success of Love, Scarborough has helped generate mass awareness, has inspired transformational gifts, and has shone needed attention onto healthcare inequity and gaps in Scarborough. The Foundation has seen tremendous growth all around (staff, events, donations, media coverage, partnership, etc.). It’s an exciting time to join the organization as we continue to build upon this momentum!

What you’ll be doing:

Are you an outgoing, enthusiastic HR professional with a passion for fostering healthy workplaces that are fun, effective, and rewarding? Are you equally a Strategic HR Business Partner adept at cultivating an accountable, high-performance organization (through both your counsel and transformational HR initiatives)?

SHN is seeking a Strategic Human Resources Business Partner to support SHN Foundation. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, People within Scarborough Health Network, with dotted line reporting to the Foundation Vice President, Finance & Operations, you will co-lead the development and implementation of a robust human resources strategy within the Foundation (in alignment with the work of our Hospital’s Human Resources Department).

You will be a member of SHN’s Human Resources team, while providing dedicated support to SHN Foundation. You will work closely with both the HR and Foundation teams.

Your responsibilities:

  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law. Be sought out by the team as a subject matter expert.
  • Provide HR resources to staff to enable them to work effectively and easily avail themselves of important documents (such as benefits, policies, best practices, payroll calendars, etc.).
  • Form collaborative working relationships as an integral part of the Human Resources Department of Scarborough Heath Network.
  • Act as lead contact for all aspects of the employee life-cycle; the position will require a strategic partner who can undertake a broad range of generalist tasks.
  • Analyze trends in compensation and benefits; research and propose competitive base and incentive pay programs to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent. Co-develop (with HR colleagues) further documentation and structure around our compensation practices.
  • Provide support and guidance to leaders and staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise.
  • In partnership with Hospital Organizational Development as well as Foundation colleagues, co-create learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal development opportunities for employees. Work with each employee/leader to advance their personalized professional development growth plan (including both internal career development and external learning/networking opportunities).
  • Manage the talent acquisition process, which may include recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified job applicants; collaborate with departmental leaders to understand skills and competencies required for openings and develop compelling job briefs.
  • Program development and delivery and project/business analysis work is a significant component of the responsibility inherent in this role and this requires superior influencing skills and change management capabilities.
  • Oversee the Foundation’s performance management cycle. In partnership with the leadership team, communicate organizational goals and help cascade to employee performance objectives. Set templates and deadlines and facilitate discussions across teams or directly with employees.
  • Develop and administer an onboarding strategy so new employees are provided information and tools necessary to quickly get started in their roles.
  • Lead opportunities (in conjunction with colleagues or committees) to add fun to the workplace via social events, birthday celebrations, lunch and learns, etc.; be a conduit for checking the morale of the organization.
  • Partner with the leadership team to co-develop, co-lead, and co-execute the Foundation's human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, including recruiting, retention, and succession planning. Assist the organization to define its culture and implement a plan to foster the desired culture.

What you bring to the position:

  • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation is highly desired.
  • Prior experience in a charity, not-for-profit, or healthcare setting is optimal.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse workplace in an inclusive manner.
  • A minimum of five years of HR generalist experience, including in strategic HR business partner roles.
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for employees.

Your competencies include:

  • History of coaching employees for career development and performance management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong sense of diplomacy, confidentiality, and demonstrated ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with external and internal stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolutions skills to adeptly build consensus.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in fundraising and stewardship is extremely helpful.
  • Commitment to help build a rewarding, engaging workplace where employees feel appreciated.

What we have to offer:

When you work with SHN and SHN Foundation, you join a caring and collaborative team that is invested in both your success and career development. This is an exciting time to join a growing and meaningful organization, with ambitions to make the biggest impact yet to healthcare in Scarborough.

We offer an excellent package to employees, including a competitive salary, an industry-leading defined benefit pension plan through HOOPP, comprehensive benefits, and the opportunity to progress and build your career.
